Sharjeel Imam's final fantasy

Five years ago I put up a couple of posts on Sharjeel Imam who is still in prison awaiting trial on various charges relating to the Shaheen Bagh protests which so greatly helped the BJP and harmed Congress.

He has recently published the article given below on the 'Polis Project' website. It appears that it was his late father- a small time politician with Nitish Kumar's JDU- who is most to blame for his poor career choices and crazy ideology. The irony here is that Nitish is currently propping up Modi's administration. Daddy, it seems, was on the side of the Fascists.

We should never judge anyone by how their adversaries represent them,

Unless those adversaries are smart and are working in our interest.

especially when it comes to fellow travelers.

Sharjeel was abandoned by his political chums because he was batshit crazy.

In my case, a month of working and speaking on the streets of Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh and Jamia during the 2019 protests against the union government’s new citizenship law, and a decade of sustained research and writing, was all ignored because of a clip mischievously propagated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and their supporters.

It was mischievously propagated by Sharjeel because was up to mischief. He wanted Assam to be cut off from the rest of India. He didn't get that the indigenous Assamese would massacre Muslim settlers if this happened. Mohammad Yunus won't be able to do shit. The Army will take over. The plain fact is, Muslims have never had the monopoly of ethnic cleansing. The thing is a two way street. Sharjeel may worship Jinnah but Jinnah had to abandon his property in India and move to Karachi where he didn't even own a house. His descendants are Indians. But they aren't Muslims.

Also because, having been a victim of “Congress nationalism,”

Manmohan Singh beat him up. Sonia Gandhi stole his lunch money. Rahul's chum, Kanhaiya Kumar pulled down his shorts and made fun of his puny genitals.

I try to seriously engage with the ideas of Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

That idea was 'the two nation theory'. Indian Muslims should become Muhajirs. Sadly, the Pakistanis don't want them. Why not go to the Gulf? The smartest people from all over the world are moving there.

It was Jawaharlal Nehru, not Jinnah, who sabotaged the 1946 Cabinet Mission Plan after it had been agreed upon by all parties (see Maulana Azad’s India Wins Freedom.

It was Nehru, not Jinnah, who was Prime Minister in Delhi when the Muslim population fell from 33 percent to just 5 percent. Nehru passed a law preventing Muslims who had fled across the border in panic from returning and reclaiming their property. Gandhi said that he knew which Congressmen in Bihar had been responsible for killing innocent Muslims. Did he suspend them from the Party? Nope. He collected some money and moved on.

Also, Aakar Patel’s

who helps BJP get votes in Gujarat.

The Constitution that wasn’t—or, a Muslim man’s vision of Independent India, National Herald, 26 Jan 2025).

That vision was of a Muslim India engaging in jihad against Israel.

Jinnah is more important than ever for any conversation around the decentralization of power, minority and community rights, and my invocation of him must be read in that light.

Jinnah protected Hindus and Sikhs in Pakistan. Minorities in Pakistan are now a larger percentage of the population than they were in 1947.

In the words of Parthasarathi Gupta, my plea is “for a federal polity and a confederal association among the countries of South Asia”

Pakistan and Bangladesh will gladly embrace Hindu majority rule. This guy should join the RSS and gas on about 'Akhand (Federal) Bharat'.

. He further writes, “In our own country, if we were to shed some of the centralist features of GOI Act 1935 and make India a genuine federation of states,

and get the Muslims to stop thinking God wants them to kill kaffirs

we will set an example to our immediate neighbors and be in a position to make the states of SAARC [the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation] a genuine confederation of peoples…”).

So, India must change its constitution and conquer its neighbours so as to create a Federal Republic corresponding to undivided India. There's just one problem. Pakistan has nukes. It doesn't want anything to do with India. It doesn't even want Indian Muslims. Indeed, they are now deporting even Hanafi Afghans.

You might disagree with me, but judgements based on the image that the troll army wants of me are problematic.

Sharjeel's problem is that he is stupid. That is what causes his image to be that of a loser who may as well rot in jail because he is bound to make a nuisance of himself sooner or later.

So is calling me crazy or a BJP agent, only because my adversaries cannot digest my positions.

They are shit. Nobody wants to digest shit.

The way a section of “progressive” media and opinionmakers (both Muslim and non-Muslim) have sought to silence me and erase our tireless and decisive contributions to Shaheen Bagh from day zero to day 18

the thing failed. BJP and AAP gained votes from Congress and the Left. Delhi now has a BJP CM.

—I mean books have been written about Shaheen Bagh without even mentioning me, Asif Mujtaba, Afreen Fatima, or others—just goes to show that this section is either disingenuous or intellectually bankrupt.

Shaheel is a Narcissist. Nothing wrong with that. Lots of politicians are. But they need to get someone smart to write their speeches or articles.

But thankfully, in this day and age, facts cannot be suppressed forever. I have no complaints; I am just pointing it out. Faith in God and the love of my people is enough for me.

His people are safer if he remains in jail.

“I am a pessimist because of my intelligence and an optimist because of my will.” Gramsci is supposed to have said that.

He did. He was quoting Romain Rolland who came to worship Stalin. What Gramsci meant by this remark is that the proletariat was fucked and would remain fucked till a Leninist party fucked everybody over so thoroughly that, by comparison, the proles would feel less egregiously fucked. Sharjeel's problem is that he is his own Lenin and Stalin. Also he is in jail not fucking up the country big time.

The same applies to my case although I would prefer a modified version: I am a pessimist because of my intelligence

he is a prisoner because of his stupidity.

and an optimist because of my faith. For some the two might be the same, but for me and people like me raised in the Islamic faith, “will” is meaningless without “faith” in God and His plans for me. There is the one grand “Will” of God, and the smaller “wills” cannot make sense or be optimistic without having faith in that “Will”—something that one can never fathom and only have faith in.

This is a garbled version of Iqbal's concept of 'khudi'.  God can ensure that a small 'will' is optimistic or pessimistic or as stupid as Sharjeel. But, equally, God may not want Sharjeel to bee so fucking stupid. Predestination may involve non-deterministic algorithms. Indeed, since we know they are superior, we can assume that 'the best of Creators' would use them. Thus 'Qadr' can be non-deterministic in alam-e-khalq, this is not so in alam-e-amr which beyond Time and thus the scope of time hierarchy theorems.

In other words, one could say history is “unknowable,” present is “unknowable,” and the trajectory of future is also “unknowable.”

Not for Muslims. Prophets prophesy. They convey knowledge of the future.

All we have are inaccurate approximations and sometimes plain wrong guesses and conceptions.

What Sharjeel has is shit for brains.

To make sense of one’s contribution or one’s place in the grand scheme of things is impossible without faith.

No. You may lack faith and yet know that you are a stupid piece of shit. That's a good reason not to clutter up the penal system. Just get a job and pay your taxes. The grand scheme of things depends on stupid people acknowledging their stupidity and staying in their fucking lane.

There are those who are too eager to see change in their own lives, who think that a revolution is just around the corner.

They are called 'nutters'.

The problem with such an approach is that

it involves being a nutter

the patience required for fundamental change is missing.

a patient nutter is still a nutter.

Patience—self-effacing patience—can only come through faith.

No. It can come from not being a fucking nutter. That's how come most people can sit quietly waiting for their train or plane or bus. They understand that such vehicles won't turn up immediately just because you really want it to.

It is faith in God which drove me towards historical studies

rather than religious studies. I suppose if he had faith in Tooth Fairy he would have been driven towards Queer Theory.

and it is faith in God which sustains me in prison

this guy is too stupid to understand that he is a Jihadi nutjob. Just because he actually is Muslim doesn't mean he can't really really want to kill kaffirs.

and it is faith in God which allows me to contextualize my life and my life’s work in a span not of decades but centuries.

His life's work, like that of his Daddy's, was to try to gain some political power or influence. Nothing wrong with that. There's lots of money in politics. But, it appears, he hasn't made much money. Muslim politicians don't want to be associated with this useless nutjob. Owaisi condemned his remarks on Assam.

I have spent five years in jail now.

Jail is a good place to make contacts. Sharjeel knows IT. Maybe he could be crypto bagman or something of that sort. Perhaps, he is just pretending to be a nutter.

I would reiterate that these have been the most productive years of my life, not only because I got to read a lot—hundreds of books—but also because I have met a lot of political prisoners, have lived with people from Assam for six months, and have been living with people from Delhi and Haryana for over four years. All this has been a learning experience.

It must be admitted that Jail is more educational than the History Dept. of JNU.

I am a student of Islamic modernism

of the sort you see in UAE? Plenty of opportunities for IT mavens in Dubai.

and its scholars such as Jamaluddin Afghani and Muhammad Abduh of Egypt. Our own Akbar Allahabadi, Allama Iqbal and Maulana Azad, and Ali Shariati, the Iranian revolutionary, have shaped my understanding of politics as well as Islam.

In that case, your understanding is zero. Islam is the same whether it is practiced by a British Lord- like Baron Stanley who converted in 1869- or a Iranian or an Indian or an Arab. But politics has changed greatly since the time of even Shariati. Some of his followers tried to kill Khatami. They were slaughtered.

It is these people who inspired me to take up a study of Islam and history as an engineering graduate.

Nothing wrong with that at all. Get a job in an Arab country and take instruction in different branches of Islamic knowledge. By all means visit leading seminaries and scholars back home. In Europe and America there are many fine seminaries as well as University Departments.

Alternatively, if you are interested in Indian politics, follow the example of Prashant Kishore. Learn a bit of Statistics and volunteer as a quant for a political campaign. Kishore has set up his own party in Bihar. Will it succeed? Perhaps not. But Kishore changed Indian politics for the better. Parties became more focussed on last mile delivery- particularly to poorer women.

I was raised in a traditional middle-class household in Bihar’s Patna and Jehanabad. My father was a local politician and contested as an independent from Kurtha in 2000. In 2005,

at a time when Nitish was allied with the BJP as he is now

he got the Janata Dal United (JDU) symbol from the Jehanabad seat for the state assembly. He lost both seats—coming third in Kurtha and second in Jehanabad—but established himself as someone who had behind him around ten percent votes in multiple state assembly seats and where Muslim population was only 10-12 percent. It gave him some hold in the JDU, which has held power in Bihar since 2005.

Nitish only broke with the BJP in 2013. Perhaps Sharjeel's father thought that his son could use JNU as a launchpad into Bihari politics- a very lucrative field- under Nitish's patronage. Also, it was possible that Rahul would shoulder Manmohan aside and lead the UPA to victory in 2014.

It is my father’s distributed vote bank that first made me aware of the flaws of the First Past the Post system (FPTP) as opposed to proportional representation.

The former makes for stability. The latter makes for either chaos or coalitions held together by corruption. Weimar made the mistake of going in for P.R because the Jewish Professor who wrote the Constitution thought his own party, which could only gain a few seats through PR, would have a bigger role. It was obvious that there could be legislative gridlock and so there was a clause permitting the President to rule by decree under certain circumstances.

As I have written earlier, under FPTP, a territory is divided into spatial constituencies, each sending a representative elected through a vote.

Proportional Representation is likely to be territorial in a big country with different languages.

The candidate receiving the largest number of votes is considered elected, even if they receive, say, less than 20 percent of the votes.

This can also be true of Proportional Representation. What matters is if coalitions are stable.

It is this system that enables parties with around a third of total votes to achieve a two-thirds majority in an assembly.

Under P.R, a party with 2 percent of the vote can gain 100 percent control of Parliament if there are many other parties none of whom pass a 1 percent threshold. Sharjeel is as stupid as shit.

India’s Constituent Assembly debates also witnessed disagreements over the issue as the Congress party abolished separate electorates.

Congress presided over the ethnic cleansing of Muslims in Delhi itself. Disagreement didn't change this outcome.

While some Muslims did speak up, demanding proportional representation, it needs to be noted that separate electorates have a significant demerit, too: Hindus can’t vote for Muslims and vice versa.

By and large, Hindus won't vote for Muslims save in countries where White people are the majority. This is because Muslims have been corrupt, stupid and useless when they have not been crazy jihadists.

People like Hasrat Mohani, the poet freedom fighter and one of the most vocal opponents of FPTP, maintained that joint electorates would eliminate Muslim representation.

Hindu people didn't like Hasrat Mohani who was elected in 1946 on a League ticket. But, he understood he would have no political future in Pakistan. It is fortunate he died before the first proper election under universal franchise was held. He was unelectable.

The alternative was proportional representation where the number of seats would be decided by the percentage of votes received by a party and while Muslims could vote for Hindus and vice versa, minorities couldn’t be silenced.

They could be ethnically cleansed. I suppose if this nutter gets out of jail and runs amok once again, he may himself contribute to this outcome. There's a good reason people like Owaisi condemn him. An Indian whose hero is Jinnah doesn't have a political future unless he crosses the border. But Pakistanis or Bangladeshis won't vote for a nutter.

My years at IIT

In 2006, at the age of 18, I qualified the Joint Entrance Examination and got admitted to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay to study computer science. Apart from that, I was into religious literature in Arabic and Persian.

Nothing wrong in that at all. Stay away from booze and hit the books.

I was also reading Islamic history even though I had yet to encounter Islamic modernism.

which was either just 'modernism' or involved fucking off from Hindu India.

In my second year at the IIT, in a literature class, when the professor started talking about evolution, I objected saying evolution was just a theory and not a fact of science.

Maybe the rumours are true. Biharis are stupid.

The professors in the IIT were like those in JNU, so he didn’t shut me up.

He was teaching 'literature'. Fuck would he know about science? Anyway, if a hefty Bihari buffalo wants to talk, let him do so. Otherwise he might knife you.

He asked me to do a presentation on the subject. The next week, standing in front of 200 students of Literature 101, I offered my presentation filled with comments from Christian pseudoscientists I had found in some Islamic books refuting evolution.

Muslims don't even have 'pseudoscientists'. They have to turn to Christians to eke out their ignorance.  To be fair, we are speaking of a Bihari. Most are bright. But some aren't at all.

Listening to my presentation of half an hour, the professor appreciated the work but asked me to read a few texts. However, more than those texts, what helped me understand evolution was

Richard Dawkins? John Maynard Smith? Nope. This Bihari buffalo

Iqbal, the poet philosopher of

Pakistan. Khameni rates him though admits that his Farsi was shite.

the 20th century. Revered among the Muslims of South Asia, people at large remember Iqbal only as the poet who wrote Saare jahan se achha. Iqbal the philosopher has been summarily ignored.

Because he was stupid. You can either be a Muslim or a follower of Nietzsche- unless you are Punjabi and thus can use Punjabi logic. Incidentally, Iqbal fell in love with Mussolini even though the dude was slaughtering Muslims in Libya.

It was Iqbal who led me to Henri Bergson and his Creative Evolution.

Which was nonsense.

He also led me to Karl Marx and his Capital.

IIT students should be able to comprehend the mathematics behind evolutionary theory or Capital theory. They shouldn't be taught 'literature' by a cretin.

Iqbal had his critiques of both, yet with profound respect.

Profound ignorance. To be fair, lots of people who returned to India after higher studies abroad went quietly mad or suffered grave mental impairment. D.D Kosambi took to proving the Reimann hypothesis by 'statistical' methods!

My point is it wasn’t Marx who opened my eyes about capitalism,

Sadly, Sharjeel's eyes were never opened to anything.

or Darwin who made me respect evolution,

why not Newton so he could get to respect gravity as well?

but Iqbal who made me understand these things. The reason is simple:

Iqbal was stupid and Sharjeel is stupid. Stupid reasoning appeals to stupid people.

the materialist treatment of these ideas by most of the protagonists of the 20th century drove me—a young and curious but faithful Muslim kid looking for answers—away. (I am not anti-communist. I mean their contributions towards the most meaningful political and economic analysis of the recent human history, towards class struggles, against superstition or ugly ideologies of capitalism would naturally be incorporated into any future development of the human thought.

Bihari buffalo thought- maybe. Human thought- not so much.

What is often problematic about communists, though, is their claim that dialectic materialism is a science,

It can have a mathematical description a la William Lawvere. If the thing generates better predictions or yields a structural causal model which enables better outcomes to be achieved, then the thing is a science.

even though materialistic ontology was abandoned by physics over a century ago.

Nope. All Physics has a physicalist description which is materialistic in the sense that Energy and matter are interlinked.

For a longer discussion, see my Worldview in a cell: a Muslim political prisoner’s insight.)

Don't. It is dreck.

Even though science abandoned deterministic materialism in the early 20th century,

It did so in the Seventeenth century when 'action at a distance' had to be accepted because it was so useful.

political ideologies still follow the old vocabulary of the Newtonian era.

The ideologies of Bihari buffaloes- maybe.

This is where a figure like Iqbal breaks new ground

for a Bihari buffalo

while avoiding the impression that we know everything or that we’re on way to knowing everything.

We know all we need to know about Sharjeel. He is stupid. Should he be in jail? No. He should be running amok thus helping the BJP to win elections.

This is where faith as the foundational building block of community and individual development comes into play.

Christians and Hindus and Jews have Faith. Sadly, if Muslims try to kill them, they may retaliate. This is bad for the economy and thus bad for everybody. That's why it is worth locking up nutters like Sharjeel.

Iqbal was one of the few philosophers who attempted to synthesize this post-Newtonian scientific knowledge with questions of faith.

Islam did that long long ago by making the insha/khabar (imperative/alethic), with Scripture being wholly imperative,  and alam-al-amr/alam-al-khalq distinction. This is the workaround for Darwin.

I am referring here of course to the ontological and epistemological questions raised by the 20th century revolutions in physics—relativity and quantum physics—and the ways in which it shattered metaphysical assumptions of materialist schools of thought as well as most religious schools of thought.

This is ignorant nonsense. What happened was that empirical evidence challenged the 'aether theory'. This in turn opened the door to what Einstein called 'Mach's principle'. Crucial experiments and empirical observations continue to drive paradigm shifts. Nobody gives a shit about 'metaphysical assumptions' or whether you are a good Muslim or Jew or whatever.

To name a few important texts, for a critique of materialism and determinism one must read Physics and Philosophy: The Revolution in Modern Science by Werner Heisenberg.

No. Heisenberg himself thought that God knew the position of subatomic particles. This is perfectly compatible with physicalism which is a variety of deterministic materialism.

one of the founders of quantum physics. For an argument in support of the mystical thought, read What Is Life? The Physical Aspect of the Living Cell and Mind and Matter, both by Erwin Schrodinger, another founding figure of quantum physics.

Who took an interest in Vedanta. But his views have been overtaken by something like the law of increasing functional information.

Further, I’d urge you to see The Conceptual Development of Quantum Mechanics by Max Jammer (specifically its chapter “The Philosophical Background of Nonclassical Interpretations”) to understand the influence of the 19th-century Christian philosopher Soren Kierkegaard—the Danish precursor of existentialism and neo-orthodox theology—on Niels Bohr, another of the pioneering quantum physics scientists.

Sharjeel does not understand that philosophy or religion or politics or ideology didn't initiate or change anything. The Michelson-Morley experiment in 1887 together with technological advances driven by commercial and military considerations did the rest.

Further, read the letters of Kurt Godel—arguably the greatest mathematician of the 20th century—between 1946 and 1966 for an enunciation of his Christian, monotheistic faith.

Wholly irrelevant. His proof of God was flawed.

A summary can be found in A Logical Journey: From Godel to Philosophy, a 1996 essay by Hao Wang. For Godel’s engagement with general relativity, read Godel Meets Einstein: Time Travel in the Godel Universe.

Again irrelevant. Still at least the fucker isn't quoting Zakir Naik.

And for an early Islamic reaction especially to relativity and evolution, one must go through Iqbal’s Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam (1930), Javid Nama (or The Book of Eternity, 1932) and Saqi Nama (or The Book of the Winebringer, 1935).

Rubbish! Iqbal was a shithead. He didn't know Science.  Also, because he didn't know Arabic, he could say little about the concept of 'barzakh'.

I am cramming these pages with references because

you are a Bihari buffalo who wants to be considered smart by other Bihari buffaloes.

I want you to enquire and engage with my ideas for themselves.

Your ideas are shit.

My words are not mere ramblings but philosophical and historical questions rooted in my reading of science, theology and history.

Shite from before the war.

There is so much to say and explain about these theories that I cannot do presently. I shall, however, try to write in more detail in future.

You wasted your life. It is too late to catch up.

By the time I graduated from IIT Bombay, I had made up my mind to study philosophy.

Because you were wholly ignorant of it.

My summer internship in Copenhagen in 2009 also provided some exposure to western universities and the Scandinavian model of welfare states. I had a long conversation about this with Amitabha Sanyal, my favorite professor and project guide. He encouraged me to take up philosophy and gifted me The Sleepwalkers by Arthur Koestler.

So, even his professors were unaware of any of the new mathematical ideas which gained currency in the Sixties and which underlie the IT revolution. The fact is problems of concurrency, complexity, computability and categoricity have fundamentally changed Epistemology. Everybody doing useful work is a pragmatist in practice. Everybody teaching empistemology is a useless wanker.

Turn to history

I applied for PhD in dozens of American universities but all of them said I needed to have a master’s in philosophy.

He still doesn't have one. But he thinks he is a great philosopher.

I decided to go to Egypt to study Islamic theology and Arabic at Al-Azhar University but the Arab Spring stalled that plan in 2011.

I'd have suggested applying for a Saudi scholarship.

So I took up a placement offer in Bangalore and started my corporate job

without having any intention of doing well in it.

while continuing to study philosophy and Islamic theology. In 2012, I appeared for the MPhil/PhD in Philosophy entrance for Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). I qualified for the viva, where the faculty appreciated my attempt. But they asked me to come back next year since I didn’t have a proposal. By then, however, something transformed and I turned to history instead.

Perhaps his father thought JNU would be a launchpad for his useless son to get into Bihari politics.

My mind had always been conflicted, coming from a scientific background.

Code monkey background.

Twentieth-century physics, as discussed above, is a philosophical tinderbox for the religious as well as the irreligious

No. It is wholly unimportant. It turned out that Philosophy was useless and 'Scientific Method' was neither scientific nor methodical.

but for a community that’s been a victim of Partition

because it couldn't make the majority community a victim and decided against migrating to the 'land of the Pure'

as well as majoritarian politics and violence,

of the sort he tried to incite

and as a son of a politician who dedicated his life against such forces,

by joining Nitish at a time when he was an ally of the BJP.

South Asian history and its fault lines were part of my daily life in a very conscious way.

A very stupid and useless way.

I had started learning German in 2011. By 2013, I was deep into 20th-century Germany and the history of fascism.

Bihari buffaloes can't go deep into any subject.

It tilted the balance in favor of history. I realized the philosophical and socio-political questions of the nature of human existence and social justice, of casteism in India and the rise of nationalism, of majoritarianism, Partition and minority rights—the most urgent questions I was seeking answers to—were historical.

The Muslims had once dominated North India. Then they lost dominance. Why? They were stupid, ignorant, and- whenever possible- an active menace to their neighbours.

Soon I left the corporate world to join JNU for a master’s in modern history. A parttime job paid me Rs 25,000 a month, a mere fraction of what I earned previously.

Bihari buffaloes are downwardly mobile.

But tragedy struck right after—my father was diagnosed with stomach cancer in January 2014 and my second and third semesters were spent at Delhi’s Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute. When I asked my father if I should leave JNU and find a corporate job again, he prohibited me saying, “Your money will not save me.” It was my uncle (my mother’s brother) who took care of all the expenses as my father, despite being a powerful figure, earned just enough to keep the household running. His possessions included a total of two vehicles, two rifles

because when it comes to killing kaffirs, one gun is never enough?

and a shop. He didn’t own a house. If not for my uncle, I would have had to abandon my studies and find a job. I will never be able to repay him (an engineer in the state government, he has since retired).

Hopefully, this cretin will be released soon and can trigger some nice communal riots and ethnic cleansing.

My mother had been a patient and sacrificing partner of my father and she wanted me to go back to my previous career. She weighed in, asking my father to tell me to go back. But my father told her, “Let him be. He will write the history of our struggles.”

He is a footnote in the history of the stupidity of the Bihari buffalo.

In May 2014, my father was watching television in the hospital when Narendra Modi was sworn in as prime minister. “Sharjeel, you should leave India,” he said. “Go to the United States, study there. If you stay here, you’ll join politics. It will be a struggle, and they’ll send you to jail.”

Fair point. Rahul had funked it. Modi would repeat his success as CM of Gujarat. Nitish would go back to the BJP.

I thought it was his paternal instinct, because he wouldn’t be around to protect me.

More to the point, he didn't have a political godfather who could protect his idiot son.

I was such a naive young man.

Stupid is the mot juste.

He knew the world better than I. He even knew me better than I. He knew I was stubborn and opinionated enough to crash headlong into this emerging fascist ecosystem.

i.e. the Justice system. Did you know that the majority of Judges and police officers in Hindu majority India are Hindu?! That is blatant majoritarianism a.k.a Fascism! No Muslim should ever be arrested for any crime. Let some innocent Hindu be convicted in their stead.

Not that he would have prohibited me, but he saw it coming.

If he hadn't made money, he too was a failure. Things of that sort can be hereditary you know.

While I hardly attended classes that year, I wrote tutorials, made software (the small salary was still a lot), and read to my father in the hospital. I remember reading a book on the Iranian revolution and listening to his comments on the events as he recalled his youth.

Oh. The family is Shia. That's why he didn't want to go to Saudi Arabia.

He passed away in November.

I spent the next semester, my fourth, idly grieving. It was my worst semester in JNU. (I am particularly apologetic to Janaki Nair, one of my professors. I took a course and a seminar but did nothing except reading the whole of Tipu Sultan’s Persian diary.)

Nair had her own problems. Her pension was withheld pending an inquiry into 'misconduct'. The Left was being pushed out of JNU thanks to the antics of people like Sharjeel.

A father’s lessons

Coming back to my father, I learned two things from him. One, that Partition led to a systemic exclusion of Muslims in the Indian polity

thanks to Jinnah. That's why this nutter idolizes him. But Jinnah got to be the Governor General of the country he created. If this nutter succeeds in provoking another ethnic cleansing, where will he go? Pakistan won't take him. Iran? Maybe. But then he'd be executed as an Israeli spy. T

and that Jinnah was right in his demands against centralization and for a true federal structure and minority rights.

He demanded and got Pakistan where minorities had the right to either be beaten to death or raped to death.

And, two, that it’s not a democracy if we have only one side to vote for.

It's not a democracy if Muslims are the majority though the Army may pretend otherwise from time to time.

That is why he said that both the JDU and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) should be strong and competing forces. Otherwise, if one side was left open for the BJP with no strong leaders and parties to keep it in check, then however good the RJD alliances may be, Muslims will not be their voters but their “slaves.”

Muslims should be slaves to this nutter. He is the Jinnah who will lead them to a new 'Pure land' at the bottom of the Indian Ocean.

The first lesson about Partition and Jinnah led me to the theoretical quest I’m currently following.

I suppose his call to cut off Assam from the rest of India was his attempt to force a Partition.

The second and more practical lesson about electoral politics has become more evident and urgent in the last decade as Muslims have lost political agency in almost all of India, except probably Tamil Nadu and Kerala and to a lesser extent Andhra and Bihar. Even in Bengal, the emergence of the BJP means we cannot be picky.

Why does this nutter not mention Owaisi?

It is based on these two lessons from my father that I have been reading and doing research and finding people invested in similar subjects.

Useless JNU jhollawallahs.

Both my MPhil and PhD are about violence inflicted on Indian Muslims.

In other words, they are propaganda, not works of scholarship.

Why this line of enquiry is of utmost urgency is visible today around us—the loss of political agency of Muslims is not accidental.

Owaisi has plenty of agency. Abdullah is a C.M. This nutter lost political agency because he was shit at politics. But he also lost agency as an IT maven or a post-grad scholar because he was stupid and did stupid shit.

It is systemic and historical, just that its most pernicious manifestation has emerged in the post-1990s era because of the alignment of many global and local variables of polity and economy.

Sharjeel was cool with ethnic cleansing of Muslims under Nehru. He was very happy with ethnic cleansing of Hindus from the Vale of Kashmir in the Nineties. Then there was a War on Terror and 1.3 million mainly Muslim people were killed and tens of millions were displaced. Sharjeel thinks this is very pernicious.

Paying lip service to equality and secularism is not enough.

It is a waste of time.

Reducing everything to class is also problematic.

Why not get a job instead?

The only way forward is through realizing that systemic change is necessary to restore agency to Muslims and other minorities of India.

But non-Muslims may exercise their agency to ethnically cleanse jihadi minorities. Why does Sharjeel worship Jinnah and wish to repeat his mistake? Jinnah could emigrate to Pakistan. Indian Muslims will not be welcomed there even if they want to go to that shithole.

And for this reason, Jinnah is more relevant today than he was in 1947, when he was anticipating the contradicting tendencies of Brahmanical forces

Nehru was a Brahmin. Patel wasn't, thank God.

and the alienation of Muslims in the narrative of “secular” Gandhian nationalism, which according to both Jinnah and Iqbal was not fundamentally different from Brahmanical revivalism with its imagined nationalist history and a tendency towards centralization and majoritarianism aided by a large section of capitalists.

But Jinnah and Iqbal had shit for brains. Pakistan is a shithole.

(For more, read Aakar Patel on the centralizing tendencies of the Congress and the possibility of a better future had true federalism been adopted, the kind that Muslim leaders such as Jinnah had hoped for.)

If you love Aakar so much, why don't you marry him?

The only lacuna in Jinnah’s political expression seems to be his silence on the issue of caste among Muslims, ostensibly because in the context of impending decolonization and Hindu consolidation in the Congress, the most urgent task was to counter centralization and majoritarianism, which required some kind of consolidation of Muslims.

Hilarious! One third of sub-continental Muslims were left on the wrong side of the border. There was no consolidation. There was Partition. Then Bangladesh went its own way and Mujahirs in Pakistan started getting it in the neck.

Representation and the Muslim League

What was anticipation then has become stark reality today. For Jinnah, the Congress party’s secularism was essentially a tool to silence and exclude Muslims and other minorities.

For Indian Muslims, Jinnah was the dick who fucked them in the ass.

Recall his assertion about secular majoritarianism and its attempt to erase other identities: “Democracy does not give one community the right to rule over another through the ballot box.”

Being Muslim, and having military or mob power, means killing kaffirs or chasing them away. Sadly, non-Muslims can do this equally well.

About Jinnah, historian Joya Chatterjee writes in Shadows at Noon (page 67): “From 1906 … until … he died … Jinnah remained a liberal constitutionalist with a rare talent for negotiation.

Not for Indian Muslims. Thanks to Jinnah, they were fucked. True, non-Muslims in Pakistan were equally fucked. J.N Mandal, Jinnah's law minister, had to run away to India. But that would have happened anyway because Muslim majorities kill non-Minorities unless there is a powerful King or Viceroy or Dictator to prevent those fools from killing the golden goose.

… What changed … in the 1930s and 40s was not Jinnah but the Congress whose leadership became ever more insistent that it represented the entire nation. … Its leadership saw less reason to conciliate those who rejected that claim. This more hegemonic stance drove out those, Jinnah among them, who believed that constitutional safeguards were necessary for minorities in Indian circumstances and that there were identities other than “Indian” that demanded space, recognition and respect. It proved impossible in the end for the arch negotiator to bring about a compromise with the party (Congress) which would not bend.”

In 1937, when elected provincial administrations were formed, it became obvious that Indians were shit at running things. There was no point keeping the country together if it was bound to turn into a shithole. You may as well support some nutter of your own community who could do the job just as well.

You could also read Iqbal’s presidential address at the All-India Muslim Conference, 1932:

if you have Pakistani citizenship- sure. But if you are an Indian Muslim, what is the point? Pakistan won't give you citizenship even if you claim you are being persecuted by the Hindus. Any way, Pakistan is currently a worse shithole than India.

“Congress leaders claim that they are the sole representatives of the peoples of India. The last round-table conference made it abundantly clear that they were not. This they (the Congress) naturally resent. … They have therefore started the present campaign … to defeat a pact which they fear may find a place in the coming constitution, and to force the government to settle the matter of minorities with the Congress alone. The Congress resolution … made it perfectly clear that since the government had refused to regard Mahatma Gandhi as the sole representative of the country, the Congress decided on Civil Disobedience. How can then a minority join a campaign which is directed as much against itself as against the government?”

In Kerala there is still a Muslim League. But there was no separatism there. In North India, there is no Muslim League. If the place is 'dar ul harb' do 'hijrat'. Try jihad, and the majority will slaughter you. This is also true of Muslims in Europe and America. Reading Jinnah & Iqbal isn't going to magically make Muslims the majority. London has a Muslim mayor. Is Sadiq Khan reading Iqbal or Jinnah? No. Sharjeel is. But Sharjeel has shit for brains and is rotting in jail. Khan has just been knighted by the King.

Sharjeel is right that Indian Muslims want Muslims to rule India. But they also understand that they will lose if they start any rough stuff. One final point. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was right when he said reading Urdu poetry rots your brains. Vid

For instance, read Iqbal on Gautam Buddha:

Qaum ne paigham-e Gautam ki zara parwah na ki
Qadr pehchani na apne gauhar-e-yaqdana ki

The nation paid no heed to the Buddha’s message
Little did it understand the worth of the priceless pearl

India paid great head to the Buddha's message for over a thousand years. That is why invading Muslims took so much trouble rooting it out.

Or his words on Guru Nanak:

Phir uthi tauheed ki sadaa Punjab se
Hind ko ik mard-e kamil ne jagaya khwab se

Once more has a monotheistic banner been raised in Punjab
India has been raised from slumber by a saintly man

Iqbal lurved Ranjit Singh- right?

I clarify again that I am neither essentializing any religious community nor passing judgements on individuals.

Nor are you saying anything sensible.

I am merely discussing the conceptual categories. I agree with Iqbal’s articulation of that delicate idea:

Kafir-e bedar dil pish-e sanam
Beh zi dindari ki khuft andar haram

The pagan idol worshipper with a living heart
Is better than the religious man who sleeps in the haram

Iqbal was wrong. The ahl al Suffah slept in the Medinan mosque.  They were better than the pagans with whom they fought. It must be said, even the most boorish Bihari buffalo can't plumb the depths of Pakistani logic.

As Ahmad Faraz said:

Main kat girun ki salamat rahun yaqin hai mujhe
Ki ye hisaar-e-sitam koi to girayega
Tamam umr ki iza-nasibiyon ki qasam
Mere qalam ka safar rayegan na jayega

No matter I’m slain or I survive, I believe
This cruel siege will be broken one day
And the tortured destinies of a lifetime bear witness
The journey of my words will not go astray

The fucker ended up as Musharraf's poet laureate. Sadly, the Pakistanis don't want Sharjeel. He is a Bihari buffalo. Let him rot in an Indian jail. He is merely a talker. How many kaffirs has he killed? None. Duffer!

Apoorvanand's big poo re. Sharjeel Usmani

In medieval Germany, as elsewhere, a stigma attached to the job of the Executioner. Thus both the job and the tools of that trade were markers of 'untouchability'. It is interesting that Scroll. In has published an article about Elgar Parishad- which was supposed to be a 'Dalit' platform- with the title- Why we need to remind the hangman of his noose. The meaning is that a feat of military valor on the part of Mahars (an educated Dalit sub caste) must be put on the footing of an activity of the 'Mang' (a more stigmatized caste some members of whom were occasionaly  obliged to take the role of executioner) so that the Dalit aspect of Elgar Parishad is covered over and people Apoorvanand may believe to be darker in skin tone than himself are, in a subtle manner, told not to get uppity but stay silent at the bottom of the ladder.

Apoorvanand's skill in Hindi, and his sly invocation of the racist, Adorno, allows him to write a seemingly inoffensive English article whose effect, nevertheless, is that Dalit Agency is denied. The anti-Caste Agenda which can unite all Faiths and all parts of India is buried . Instead, everything is made to focus on 'Ashraf' or 'Aryan' people from the Gangetic plains with the latter patronizing the former in a purely hypocritical spirit.

Apoorvanand Jha (referred to as a big jar of poo by his numerous detractors) , who teaches Hindi, and thus is permitted to write more or less correct English despite being a Professor, begins his essay with a quotation from Adorno even though Adorno has been scorned for his racism since before either I or big jar of poo got to School.

Is this Maithili Brahmin merely stupid- or is he, in a suave and subtle manner, merely pretending to be stupid, so as to work his Casteist mischief?
“Totalitarian regimes are …paradoxically pluralistic. This permits the masses to identify with or distance from the regime as needed. However when a totalitarian regime breaks apart, the majority can then shuffle the atrocities off themselves as what ‘they’ committed and by renouncing horror and bad conscience, while it is much easier for them to keep faith with the advantages the regime offered.
— Theodore Adorno in 'Guilt and Defense'.

The problem with this quote is that all regimes- or none at all- are paradoxically monistic or pluralistic or anything else you care to assert. When any sort of regime 'breaks apart', everybody- not just the majority- says 'those shitheads fucked up. That was nothing to do with us.' On the other hand, nobody acknowledges or 'keeps faith' with any 'advantages' the previous regime offered. This is sensible. It is better to believe that the good things you have came to you by your own efforts, not the benevolence of some fucking broken-down regime.

Will we listen to a young fellow Indian patiently

No! The guy is young- i.e. ignorant- and Indian- i.e. as poor as shit and with shit for brains. Even if he weren't either of those two things, why listen to anyone at all patiently? How would it benefit us?

as he asks us an uncomfortable question with care or will we hound him to death for his audacity?

We won't give a toss either way.

I am assailed by this question as I see that Hindtuva leaders have invented a new villain for Hindus.

Muslims who believe they are at war with Hindu society are old villains from the Hindu point of view.

After demonising student leaders Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam,

and Apoorvanand whom the Police thinks played a criminal role in the Delhi riots

Hindutva leaders are now after another youth campaigner, Sharjeel Usmani.

The police are after him in the same manner they were after Apoorvanand.

They claim that he insulted Hindus in his speech at the Elgar Parishad event in Pune on January 30.

I think, the claim is that he broke the law by indulging in a particular type of hate speech aimed at promoting enmity between people of different religions. However, more significant is his contention that India is in a state of war- i.e. is dar ul harb- against Islam.

Before going into the details of the case, it would be correct to say that they are assuming (or hoping) that Hindu sentiments will be hurt by his remarks.

I don't think this is the case. Nobody thinks that a person of another religion is obliged to harbor sentiments of respect for one's Faith or for the conduct of one's co-religionists. It would scarcely be news that a Muslim dislikes idol worshipping Hindus. On the other hand, the Sangh Parvivar ought to highlight remarks by political opponents who claim to be Hindus but who say things which are defamatory about Hinduism. In this way, the BJP gains support from Hindus who might otherwise have voted for another Party. Currently, any time a TMC goon says something nasty about Lord Ram, the 'bakhts' will tweet about it. But there is no point drawing attention to a Muslim or a Christian who says 'Hindus are following a satanic religion. That is why they behave in a horrible manner. They should convert to my religion so as to be able to join me in Paradise.' After all, there are some Hindus who say to us 'my dear, you are following a satanic path. Kindly give up such and such irreligious practice and convert to my Sect. Then you and I will enjoy Moksha together.'

What is alarming about Usmani's speech is that he is saying a section of the Indian population will support him in the War he believes is already being waged.

First, a criminal case was registered against Usmani in Maharashtra, which is ruled by the Shiv Sena, the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party. After an appeal by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders to their Uttar Pradesh counterparts to put Usmani behind bars, another case has been lodged in Lucknow.

This is rather strange. UP is ruled by the BJP. Nobody thinks Yogi Adityanath is a 'dove' who needs to be prodded by anybody else to take this sort of action.

The question is, why did Maharashtra launch a police case? The answer is that the BJP had threatened to launch an agitation on this issue.

Some Muslim leaders have already distanced themselves from Usmani, lamenting that fact that he has allowed himself to be pushed to an extremist position by fascist forces.

His dad is a Professor of Geography at Aligarh Muslim University- where he studied. It may be that the author thinks the boy's daddy and his Professors were 'fascist forces' who pushed him or prodded him or interfered with him in some other way.

It is becoming clear that the young man will have to fight a lonely battle in the coming days.

But his jail cell won't be lonely. Overcrowding is a major problem in Indian prisons. The senile nutters who organized the Elgar Parishad gave a silly young man enough rope to hang himself. He says India is at war. He does not trust the police or the judiciary. This means that from being externed from his District under the 'Goonda' Act- i.e. being treated as a campus ruffian or hothead- he will get the tag of seditionist at war with the Government of India and 'Hindu Society' which he describes as 'rotten'.

At this point, anyone with a heart would help get the kid out of India. Let him go be a 'dissident' in Europe- the Saudis and Emiratis won't have him- or Amrika, or better still- Canada. Meanwhile, in India, Owaisi will build a pan Muslim party.

What exactly did Usmani say that caused Hindutva leaders to be so outraged? He said that a rot has set in India’s Hindu society. He explained his disappointment with this society. How could a crowd stab a 14-year-old child 31 times? What do people do after lynching someone? They go back to their usual business, do their daily chores. Do they use some purifier, something to wash their hands? How do they eat peacefully, love their near ones, touch the feet of their elders? How do they comfortably move from one lynching to another? This is the part of Sharjeel Usmani’s speech making the rounds.

Usmani says he is at war with India- more particularly its 'Hindu Society'. Killing those at war with you may involve lynching if the police or armed forces can't get to the spot fast enough. This guy just justified the practice.

Should these words be an occasion for the BJP leaders, or for us, the Hindus they claim to represent, to take offence?

Yes. Why? Because we kill people who try to kill us. We aren't really non-violent at all. By taking offense at 'fighting words' we send an eusocial signal. Suppose you are in the habit of coming up to me and telling me I'm a rotten fellow and that you are at war with me. One day you try to stick a knife in me. But I smash your head in first. Your friends might, with justice, reproach me for not having let you understand the consequences of your threatening behavior. It is sensible to take offense at a guy talking shit about you if you will in fact beat him to death the moment he has worked himself up sufficiently to try to knife you.

Shouldn’t we pause to ask what makes a young, educated fellow Indian who happens to be a Muslim say this?

Stupidity and hunger for publicity. The kid is just 23 years old. Give him a break. But what happens when we pause to ask why big jar of poo- a Maithili Brahmin whose own OBC colleagues find his arrogance enraging- is writing this? The answer is the bigot is an upholder of his imaginary Caste privilege. He hates Modi and Yogi because they are 'lower caste'. He waxes poetic about Muslims because his people were too cowardly to either harm or protect Muslims. Mithila's Dalits, however, may tell another story.

This is the clash between Hinduism and Hindutva. The former is about preserving anachronistic distinctions by cunning hypocrisy. The latter is about getting rid of hereditary entitlement and embracing meritocracy so that the country can rise up. But, if that happens, people like big jar of poo will have to admit that only the genuinely productive- not the cunning, not the mischievous, not the cowardly- should be honored and rewarded regardless of birth or some soi disant 'education'.

Before going further, let us ask those who want Usmani jailed if the reason for their anger is solely the religious identity of the questioner or the actual content of his question.

It is solely his religious identity because, experience has taught us, Hindus who talk that stripe of shite are merely virtue signaling cretins or mischief-mongers like this big jar of poo.

When a young Muslim talks of India being at war with Islam- and hence a dar ul harb- he is under pressure to match his deeds to his words. In this case, the guy was already facing criminal charges albeit under a less serious Act relating to hooliganism. Now he will be under the radar for seditious conspiracy or waging war against the State.

You'd really have to hate young people- which, I suppose, many professors do- to want to make trouble for a 23 year old hot-head who comes, after all, from a good family and who hasn't actually killed anybody- yet.

Isn’t the question relevant? Usmani was forced to ask it because we never cared to ask ourselves how a society could be at peace with itself after the mass killing of Sikhs in 1984.

We don't care to ask ourselves stupid questions about shite which only exists in the wooly head of a guy who teaches Hindi for a living. On the other hand, we do ask ourselves 'does my ass look fat in these jeans?'

Why didn’t we as Hindus demand that the people responsible for the murders to be brought to book?

For the same reason we don't, as Hindus, demand that our own heads be chopped off and shoved up our pooper. To be clear, that reason is that it is not in our interest.

How is it that justice for the victims of 1984 has remained a concern only for Sikhs?

Because Sikhs were killed. Hindus weren't. So, quite sensibly, Hindus don't really give a toss about this issue- though no doubt a few may pretend otherwise for some more or less transparent reason.

Why aren’t we alarmed that the murderers and those complicit in the mass killing are living as honourable fellow citizens?

Because they didn't kill Hindus. This is an 'uncorrelated asymmetry'.

They could be our uncles, neighbors, colleagues.

or catamites

Were there no Hindu witnesses to the killings?

After that Bhagalpur. And before that Nellie. Many more. How can we forget Gujarat of 2002?

We haven't. But that was a case where Hindu blood was avenged and then some. Guess who is P.M of India today?

In the uprising of the farmers in the Western Uttar Pradesh, the painful memory of the mass killing and displacement of Muslims in 2013 has resurfaced. Can you have farmers’ unity without assuring justice for Muslims who were wronged by their Hindu neighbors?

Of course you can! Rakesh Tikait is going great guns precisely because, as we all learned in 2013, Jats like killing lower caste agricultural workers- more particularly those of a different Sect. Also they want more money. Money is cool.

The souls of Mohammed Akhlaq, Pehlu Khan, Tabrez Ansari, Afrazul Khan, Junaid and scores like them who were lynched ask how is it that their killers are enjoying their lives after depriving them of the gift of life that was bestowed on them by the Almighty. Why should it not be a debate for Hindus? Weren’t the killers from within Hindu society?

But the victims weren't. Does this cretin really not get that shit that happens to others because they are different from us is shit we don't give a toss about?

The rot to which Usmani referred runs deep in our society. It is not confined just to killing Muslims or persecuting Christians. We have turned the invocation “Jai Shri Ram” into a slogan that is shouted when Muslim localities are ravaged. Should not we think about it?

No. Hinduism has been at the receiving end of Muslim and Christian violence. That sucked ass big time. By contrast, killing Muslims is correlated with better, not worse, life-chances for Hindus. Don't kill Christians, though. Their Schools and Colleges are great. Also the nicest countries to immigrate to tend to be deeply Christian.

It was only after the defeat of Hitler that the question of the complicity of ordinary Germans in the genocide was asked seriously.

Because Germany was shorn of a lot of territory and forcibly occupied by the victors. By contrast, Portugal and Spain were admitted to the UN. Nobody asked about the 'complicity' of Franco's or Salazar's people in any type of crime.

The message is simple. Only if you are being held down by your enemy do you need to start soul-searching and pretending to repent.

Should they have felt offended when Jewish people asked them, even if you did not kill us, why did you allow us to be killed?

The Germans had spent a lot of time explaining to the Jews that they were hateful. Smart Jews got the fuck out of Germany. Some Germans may have realized that getting rid of Jews is a bad idea coz Jews be hella smart. But nobody has ever suggested anything similar about Indians of any description.

As a study by the philosopher Adorno demonstrates, when confronted with questions about their role in the preparations for the Holocaust, the majority of Germans tried to shrug off any responsibility.

To be fair, the vast majority succeeded in shrugging off any responsibility. Also, under 'Operation Paper-clip' any Nazi with useful scientific knowledge got a wonderful new life working for NASA or whatever.

Adorno persisted with his interrogation.

He was as stupid as shit. That's why the US didn't want to keep him- unlike the Nazi scientists they recruited in droves. So Adorno went back to Germany- till the radical students made his life miserable. Apoorvanand may be hoping his own female students will bear their breasts in rage at his bourgeois tendencies. I may be wrong. What the guy may really relish is golden showers galore from hunky students with or without circumcised cocks.

When victims find the tormenter brushing aside the issue of murder, they want to shake him into consciousness. It is a desperate attempt.

It is an impossible attempt. Victims of murder can't shake shit.

Yes, Hindus do need to get hurt by Usmani’s question.

in the same sense that they need to give Apoorvanand golden showers galore while he writhes in ecstasy

We need to hang our heads in shame

to auto-fellate?

that a young member of a community that has lived side by side with us for centuries now looks at us as potential murderers.

Potentially, everybody is a murderer who will give Apoorvanand golden showers galore

We know that Sharjeel Usmani will be scolded for using the term “Hindu society”.

I think the guy faces something worse than a scolding.

He could have been more circumspective by saying “some Hindus” or he could have avoided the word “Hindu” altogether, those criticising him will say. Was not he blaming all Hindus for the foul act of some elements?

He said he was at war with India. That was clear enough.

Another objection will be that a Muslim does not have the right to criticise Hindus.

A Muslim Health Specialist is welcome to criticize Hindu practices from a Scientific point of view. We won't praise him but will quietly steal his ideas and then claim that we found them in some Brahmana or Aranyaka.

It is alright if a Hindu does it. Muslims should mind their business, worry about the ills that plague Muslim society and not pontificate to Hindus.

But there is a problem with this demand.

Apoorvanand won't get golden showers galore.

Muslims have every reason to question Hindus because those persecuting Muslims come from their fold.

Unless they live in a Christian country which Islamic terrorists have attacked. Then they have to show loyalty and a willingness to abide by the law. Questioning shit won't help.

Because Hindus have elected a party that has made it very clear that Muslims hold a secondary status in the national life.

To have a reason to do a thing is to get a reward for doing it. Nobody has any reason to do stupid shit. Muslims got a second class status wherever they did not get a first class status. This outcome could be overturned by war. Usmani has stated that this war now prevails in India, as far as he is concerned. The problem with wars is that some people end up incarcerated without firing a single shot. It is enough to be identified as a hostile combatant to be put behind bars. If you aren't an actual soldier, your treatment will be worse, not better.

Hindus seem obsessed with Muslims and their lives.

Nonsense! We are obsessed with the Kardashians or other smart, rich, cool people.

We want to protect Muslim women,

No we don't.

we want to drag them out of backwardness,

Why? We're pretty damn backward ourselves.

we want to modernise them, we want to school them about nationalism. We want to choose for them their food, their attire, their ways of greeting so that they look agreeable to Hindu eyes.

Sheer nonsense! We don't give a toss about people as stupid and backward as ourselves. We are interested in richer countries with better looking people and a more sophisticated porn industry.

It is not that Hindus are indifferent to Muslims. It is this that gives Sharjeel Usmani the right to lament the corrosion of the soul of Hindu society.

Is that what he was doing? Perhaps, but only in the sense that he was actually giving Apoorvanand a golden shower.

Similarly, Umar Khalid has every right to ask Hindu journalists about the lies that they spread about him and ruined his life.

His lawyers can certainly subpoena whom they like. I suggest they start with Siddhartha Varadarajan.

The students of the Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University have every right to ask the policemen who came from Hindu society why they used communal slurs while attacking them.

Presumably, Apoorvanand accords equal importance to the right of a person being raped to ask the rapist why they keep using homophobic slurs while sodomizing them.

The dead Faizan has a right to ask the chief of the Delhi Police why he was humiliated and assaulted by his men, all Hindus, for his crime of being Muslim.

This is where I part company with Apoorvanand. It may be that in Hindi literature, dead people routinely exercise their right to ask questions but, in English literature- or at least Agatha Christie novels- no such right obtains. Why? Rights are linked to remedies under a vinculum juris- a bond of law. Unless Apoorvanand knows of a way to bring a corpse back to life, that corpse has no right to ask questions since the remedy- viz. being brought back to life- does not exist.

Of course, it may be that this big poo is speaking rhetorically.

These are not rhetorical questions.

In which case this big poo is a cretin.

We should not complain that by doing this, Hindus are being forced into a state of guilt and that such an expression of guilt is unhealthy. We should not ask why the multitude of Hindus should feel guilty for the acts of a minuscule, wayward section.

But we should listen to a cretin who thinks dead people can exercise a right to ask questions of all and sundry.

We need an Adorno to examine the collective mind of the Hindus

Why? Adorno failed in Germany. Anyway, collective minds don't exist. Adorno didn't have much of a mind. But, like Apoorvanand- who thinks Elgar Parishad is only important in the context of 'Aryan' v 'Ashraf', with himself as the former hypocritically patronizing the latter- Adorno did have a mental block against seeing darker skinned people as being as creative and as important as people like himself- or rather, the sort of person he imagines himself to be.

that identifies with the regime, enjoys the advantages it gives them and yet does not own up to the atrocities that are being committed under its watch and in the name of Hindus.

Apoorvanand identifies as a teacher of Hindi. He enjoys the advantages this gives him yet he does not up to the atrocities committed by Hindi teachers both now and in the past.

One atrocity he is himself testimony to- viz. the turning to shit of the brains of those who study Hindi at University- unless, of course, they are Russian or Chinese rather than Indian. Of course, the same thing could be said about any native English speaker studying Eng Lit at Uni.

The angry reaction of the Hindus demanding criminal cases against Sharjeel Usmani is in fact an expression of the defensiveness of the Hindus about the question he has put before them.

No. Hindus want not just terrorists, but Muslim nutters working themselves up to become terrorists, to be locked up forthwith. Funnily enough a lot of Muslims- indeed some Islamic regimes- feel the same way.

Any reference to the crime is seen as an attempt to defame the criminal.

Interestingly, this big poo has not referred to the other criminal charges facing Usmani.

Again, to use Adorno, the hangman gets upset when reminded in his own home of the noose.

He also gets upset if you shit on the dining table. Indeed, everybody does- whether or not they are a hangman. The fact is, nobody likes being treated in an insulting fashion in their own home. Big Poo may be an exception. He may express great delight if I barge into his home and start making fun of him for being a fucking cretin teaching an utterly worthless subject to people who should already be able to study Hindi quite sufficiently just by reading books and using dictionaries.

It would be good for our collective health

on the assumption that getting golden showers galore is good for our health

that we listen to Sharjeel Usmani instead of being defensive. We must effect an urgent course correction to save ourselves and the nation from a greater tragedy.

What greater tragedy? The fact is Hindus benefit economically if the non-Hindu population is reduced and vice versa. This is the law of diminishing returns at work. Overpopulation, sadly, is associated with ethnic cleansing. Once that starts, nobody has any choice but to support their own group and to run away from where the other group has the upper hand. This, at any rate, is the lesson taught by, if not Hindi Literature, then actual Indian History. Shame, but there it is.

On the other hand, India gains if Dalit and other productive communities rise up. That is something we can all get behind. Virtue signalers, however, can go fuck themselves. They bring nothing to the table.

Siddhartha Varadarajan turning to Holiness and Spirituality.

American citizen, Siddhartha Varadarajan, writes in the Wire (which is funded by not journalism but corporate charity)-
August 5 – the date chosen consciously by baleful men to humiliate the people of India whose independence on August 15 they never fought for – will go down in history as a day that celebrates the triumph of vandalism and destruction over renewal and regeneration, crime and illegality over law and justice, fiction and fabrication over reality and truth.
Why did Pakistan become independent on August 14 while India had to wait an extra day? There were two factors, Mountbatten, a Britisher, liked a certain date because it was the anniversary of the Japanese surrender. Hindu astrologers had some objection, so the country gained 'Freedom at Midnight'. In other words, India's Independence day was determined by a British man's preference as modified by Hindu Astrologers. Muslims were not consulted. They had gone their own way or else were subject to ethnic cleansing and a dramatic clawback of entitlements.

Hindus fought for their Independence. American citizens, like Varadarajan, were not involved- save for Satyananda Stokes, who converted to Hinduism.

The vast majority of Indian people are not humiliated by the fulfilment of Manifesto pledges by their elected leaders. On the contrary they are jubilant. A minority may not like it, but then that minority, in 1946, overwhelmingly backed the Muslim League and its demand for partition, so that an Islamic State could be created.

Varadarajan liked Communism. But Communism has failed in India. Still, as an American, he stood in little danger even if it had triumphed in India.
On the appointed day, when India slept, the people of Kashmir awoke to curfew and unfreedom.
While those of Jammu and Ladakh woke to the opposite. What was the result? Terrorism declined. It seems unlikely that the good people of the Valley can once again ethnically cleanse their non-Muslim neighbors. The fact is August 15 commemorates the day the Japanese woke to occupation and subjugation. They could no longer kill and conquer their neighbors. Similarly, Nazi Germany woke to defeat and humiliation on 7th May 1945. In the medium to long term, this turned out to be salutary.
On the appointed day, a group of criminals – who should be in prison for having planned and orchestrated the demolition of a 450-year-old mosque – basked in the freedom they have to build a temple at the same spot.
Varadarajan knows very well that Gandhi and Nehru and Azad were 'criminals'. They courted arrest deliberately. Why? They believed right was on their side. It was their prison record which established their fitness to lead. Similarly, it was obvious, those who demolished the structure wanted to be arrested. The fact is two years previously, the police had shot some pilgrims and the Chief Minister who gave the orders had lost the elections. It was clear that the Indian voter would not stand for the Government killing people simply to protect bricks and mortar. Had prison sentences been imposed on those who razed the structure, they would then have swept the polls and altered the Constitution.

Varadarajan himself could raise his profile if he courted arrest by defying any law he considers unjust. But, as an American citizen, he can't stand for election. Even if he re-acquired Indian citizenship, the problem remains that the Indian people do not share his views on what is or isn't just. He began condemning Modi almost twenty years ago. But the more Varadarajan and his ilk attacked Modi the better Modi began to look to even Western educated, deracinated, Indians.

Had Varadarajan & Co done good investigative journalism we would now respect them. But they chose to double down on stupid lies and ended up hurting the Left. Consider the fate of Sharjeel Imam who wrote a couple of pieces for Varadarajan's 'the Wire'. The fellow is now in jail after calling for Muslims to cut off the Siliguri gap- leaving the Assamese free to conduct plenty of Nellie type massacres. Varadarajan himself got into trouble with the law for falsely claiming that U.P's Chief Minister was telling people they could not catch the virus if they participated in some religious ceremony.

Varadarajan, as a Communist, may well disapprove of Temples. He has a right to express his views. But in making the Wire a vehicle for his grievances he destroys its journalistic credibility. Just kidding. It has no credibility.
Their temple, and not Rama’s and certainly not India’s.
With Prime Minister Narendra Modi supervising the obsequies, the wreckage of what remains of the Indian constitution has been interred in the foundations of the temple that his organisation, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, is building with the full backing of the ‘secular’ Indian state.
The problem here is that we believe that the Temple is being constructed by a Trust- not by the R.S.S. A good journalist needs to try to show that the Trustees are men of straw. Behind them is the RSS. Since Varadarajan is not doing so, we think the Trustees are independent. The silly man is simply telling stupid lies.

A better angle of attack would be to say 'why aren't RSS cadres building the Temple? Surely that would benefit them most? Is the reason because RSS cadres are not considered 'ritually pure'? In other words, enemies of the BJP should try to divide the Hindus by playing the caste card. They should hint that the Temple is being built in a manner the hyper-orthodox might think improper. Varadarajan, blinded by hate, misses a trick. On the other hand, the Wire does carry an article highlighting Orthodox objections to the timing and nature of the 'bhoomi puja' ceremony. But, it contradicts Varadarajan's assertions. It is apparent that the a scholarly Hindu body from the Prime Minister's constituency, not the RSS which is based elsewhere, which is running the show. They have controverted the allegations raised by a Shankaracharya- i.e. a upholder of Brahmanical orthodoxy- in a manner ordinary Hindus can easily understand.  Furthermore, the writer of the article has elsewhere highlighted the role of the 'Dalit'- who laid the first foundation stone more than 30 years ago- in the performance of this ritual.
The writer for the Wire, as may be expected, tells stupid lies. He says  (Modi)' was not only the chief guest but also the master of ceremonies and the official yajmaan (patron of a religious ritual) during the ceremony.' This is bizarre, the patron can't be the 'master of ceremonies' any more than a patient on the operating table can be the surgeon. The chief guest can't be the yajmaan host anymore than I can invite myself to dinner.
The Trust's tweet clarifies matters- “Shri Mahesh Bhagchandka and Shri Pawan Singhal from family of Shri Ashok ji Singhal will be Mukhya Yajman (main worshippers) in Bhumi Pujan. PM Shri @narendramodi, Shri Mohanji Bhagwat, Pujya Nritya Gopaldasji Maharaj, Governor Smt Anandiben Patel and CM Shri @myogiadityanath will be present on stage.

The fact is, the Trust as constituted by the Government did not include anyone with charges against them relating to the destruction of the disputed structure. Such people were brought in by the Trust afterwards. Furthermore, the ex Civil Servant who has a prominent role in the Trust was associated with other political parties and leaders earlier in his career. Thus, the expectation is, other Hindu leaders will be conciliated as time goes by. The truth is, things like this can be easily mismanaged. Indeed, many of us expected that there would be all sorts of internecine conflict re. guest lists and auspicious dates and the sequence of rituals and so forth. What the BJP Government has done is shown it can arrange things smoothly. This was unexpected. It is the reason that Hindu leaders are reconciled to what has happened. They imagined the BJP would be like a dog with a bone. It wouldn't play nice. This would backfire sooner or later. The 'Sadhu Sangh' would get split. The Hindu vote would get factionalized. This has not happened. Maybe the lockdown helped. Or maybe the BJP is just better at getting things done in a proper manner.

I say ‘what remains of the constitution’ because key sections of that document had already been waterboarded and drowned in the dark waters of Dal Lake – its pages torn and scattered in the days, weeks and months which followed the scrapping of Article 370 and 35A last August.
But the Supreme Court, which alone has the right to interpret the Constitution, has not taken this view. This is another example where the 'intellectuals' fell down. They needed to get really smart Constitutional lawyers to at least obfuscate the issue. They didn't bother, choosing to rely instead on the work of a 90 year old man whose assertions were controverted by a crucial 2016 judgment of the Court re. J&K having no 'vestige of sovereignty'.

Bad journalism and recycling failed arguments have contributed to the calamitous decline of the Left. Just ten years ago, these people were respected. Now look at them! They sound utterly senile!

Both these acts which help to define the ‘New India’ Modi is ushering in – of turning citizens (in Kashmir, but later elsewhere) into subjects without fundamental rights, of allowing Hindu chauvinist criminals to take control of the scene of their crime and present their factional project as a ‘national’ one – would not have been possible without the indulgence of the Supreme Court.
This is the crux of the matter. People like Varadarjan should have proactively recruited smart people to uncover new facts- or plausible new lies- and to come up with new arguments of an abstruse sort- so as to keep the Supreme Court occupied. Everybody expected these particular cans to be kicked down the road. But, the Left simply gave up. They concentrated on talking hysterical nonsense. So they have lost salience.
But as a journalist, I find the complicity of the media to be just as shocking.
Why is the Wire so shite? This is not complicity, it is complacency. Varadarjan and his ilk should have talent-spotted smarter, younger, people and given them space to raise new issues so as to keep the debate going. But these lazy sods did not bother to do any such thing. They don't want competition. So they just keep recycling their bogus cri de coeurs. After all, they don't have to compete in the market. They get charity from capitalists.
A dominant section of India’s media has helped the ruling Bharatiya Janta Party market two enormous lies. First, that a temple of the Sangh, by the Sangh and for the Sangh is really a ‘Hindu’ temple or, even more fancifully, an ‘Indian’ temple.
Varadarajan may be a Communist who does not visit Temples but he must know that some of his relatives, who may be with Congress, will visit this particular Temple. Most Hindus, given the chance, will do so. But Hindus are 80 per cent of the population! The fact is, when Iyers first settled in New Delhi, we would go only to one or two South Indian temples. Then we started branching out as we became more familiar with the place. Consider the Swami Narayan temples. We didn't build them. We didn't know much about the sect which did build them. But once we started going to their Temples we felt that we belonged. The first time you eat 'dhokla' you are suspicious. But then you start to like it. You compare it favorably with Idli. Your Mummy starts cooking it for you. It has become part of your own cuisine though, no doubt, it is Gujerati, not Tamil.
And second, that the abolition of Article 370 and 35A of the constitution and the scrapping of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir was intended to help the fight against terrorism, promote economic development and make the people of the erstwhile state true Indians.
I don’t know what perverted axiom of astrology has linked both these big lies with the same date on the calendar but one can sense a desire on the part of the RSS to build a narrative around a chosen day which they can present as the marker of their ‘New India’.
A journalist's job is to find out, or at least speculate in a plausible manner, about why a particular date should become significant. That is 'news' not 'views'.  Varadarjan is proud of his ignorance. He says it must be for some astrological reason. But that is pure deracinated ignorance! Indian astrologers use a different calendar. Every Hindu knows their 'star birthday' is movable unlike their official birthday. Thus it can't be the case that a day in the solar calendar has a special astrological significance. Either it is a birth or death anniversary of some particular figure or it has just come to be seen as an 'auspicious' day. This is the sort of stuff journalists should try to figure out.

The campaign to demolish the Babri Masjid and replace it with a Ram temple was first and always an RSS-BJP campaign.
Is the BJP paying Varadarajan to say so? No. They know the fool will help them because he is too stupid to help himself or to help his own cause. There is no need for payment.
From the mid-1980s to the destruction of the mosque on December 6, 1992, the BJP used the RSS cadre base to launch a highly visible agitation. And though the resulting communal polarisation helped the BJP grow its presence in parliament from two seats in 1984 to 85 in 1989 and 182 a decade later, its vote share, even when Atal Bihari Vajpayee became prime minister in 1999, never exceeded 24%. A decade later, the party’s vote share had fallen to 18% and though Narendra Modi has increased the BJP’s votes, the 2019 election saw only 37% of Indians voting in an ‘either you’re with us or against us’ fight for the party whose manifesto promised a lot of things and also a Ram temple in Ayodhya.
The problem here is that 80 per cent approve the Temple and, if able to do so, would visit it. That is why other parties did not want to let the BJP build the Temple. Indeed, according to the letter of the law, they are not doing so- an independent Trust is. To give them all the credit if you oppose them is foolish.  Furthermore, saying the BJP has fulfilled 3 Manifesto promises does not hurt them even if you yourself opposed those pledges. On the contrary it makes that party seem more credible and fit to govern. To attack the BJP you need to say, 'only by accident have they achieved these Manifesto pledges. But luck can only get you so far. The voters can't be fooled. '

I mention vote shares here because that is the only observable metric we have to gauge the actual appeal of the temple.
Says a guy who went to the LSE! The fact is the extent of the 'revealed preference' of Indians for, first, the Ramayana TV serial and then the 'brick donation' and 'rath yatra', took Indian social scientists by surprise. It was clear that if the thing could be done without too much blowback, then 80 per cent wanted it done. What mattered was Muslim preference intensity in the opposite direction. That is what has changed. Consider what happened the first time an Israeli P.M came to India. The poor fellow couldn't even get to the Taj Mahal! Now Israeli Presidents and P.Ms come and go with nary a ripple of opposition.
Yet, today we are being told, by the RSS and BJP of course, but also by breathless television anchors, that the temple whose foundation stone Modi laid on August 5 represents the fulfilment of a long pent-up national demand. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
Varadarajan could not be further from the truth even if he had never returned from America in the first place. Hindus like Hindu temples. A Ram temple would be visited even by Sikhs and Jains and Buddhists. The vast majority of the country is Hindu. Even Communists go to Temples to pray for the overthrow of Capitalism!
“Centuries of struggle are coming to an end today,” the prime minister said, forgetting the fact that the Sangh’s “struggle” is barely 35 years old.
Varadarajan forgets that the dispute over the site, according to British records, stretches back to at least the Nineteenth Century.
Modi then added: “I’m sure scores of people can barely believe that they are alive to see this day.” What he did not say was that thousands more are indeed not alive to see this day – because the violence triggered by the Sangh’s temple agitation took their lives.
Yet a repetition of that violence is not feared. Why? Because the country is better run.
Modi fast-tracked the mandir project through the apex court even as he used his control over the Central Bureau of Investigation to ensure the criminal case against the conspirators who demolished the mosque made no progress.
This is the sort of charge which requires good investigative journalism in order to be sustained by a Court of Law. Varadarajan and his ilk fell down in this department. Consider the BOFORS or 'Coffingate' scandals. Clearly some Indian journalists could uncover damaging facts which changed the political landscape. Varadarajan seemed bright and well connected. We thought he'd prove his mettle sooner or later. But he turned out to be a maudlin cretin.
The Supreme Court’s verdict was perverse – it accepted that the Muslims had been illegally and forcibly dispossessed of their mosque and that the 1992 demolition was a crime, and yet allowed the site to be given to those who were still standing trial for that crime.
This is nonsense. The destruction of the mosque was illegal. But it was popular. That is why the State did not press charges. The site has been given to the deity of the shrine in accordance with Indian law.
What made this bizarre verdict possible was that very criminal act, without which the court would have had to order a historic mosque’s demolition in order to allow the Sangh parivar to have its way.
So what? It is not the case that the party which won the suit did not have 'clean hands'.
I like to believe our lordships would have baulked at delivering such an order.
Journalists should not tell us what they like to believe. They should try to uncover facts so that our beliefs can be corrected in a salutary manner.
After the verdict, the government promptly announced the establishment of a trust to oversee the temple. However, the pretence of this being a non-partisan project came to an end quickly when Nritya Gopal Das and Champat Rai – key figures in the Sangh’s temple agitation who have been indicted by the CBI for demolishing the Babri masjid and can still be imprisoned for the crime – emerged as president and secretary of the trust, respectively.
It was the Trust which brought in these two men. Why did they do so? Nritya Gopal Das is the head of an important temple and has built other temples in the area. He is innocent of any crime till proven guilty in a court of law. The same is true of Varadarajan himself. Champat Rai belongs to the VHP which is often at odds with the RSS. No doubt, it is convenient for the BJP to leave a sword dangling over both their heads.
Narendra Modi and Yogi Adityanath have used the temple event and its surrounding media hype to force-fit the Republic of India into a Hindu mould that its constitution would never have allowed.
Why not? There is a Directive Principle re. Cow Protection in it. Perhaps Varadarajan thinks Cows are sacred to some Religion other than Hinduism. The fact of the matter is that China had gone Communist by the time the Indian Constitution was published. Religion was in the dog house. Marxism was supposed to prevail. But, perhaps because of the low intellectual caliber of its recruits- e.g. Varadarajan himself- it began to sink, if not stink.
The August 5 event is the clearest sign yet that the Hindu rashtra project of the RSS is now in high gear and will gather even greater momentum in the months and years ahead.
Why concede this point? If you oppose the BJP you should point out that their gains have come more from luck than cunning. Their momentum is petering out.

Modi gave advance notice of this project during the 2019 Lok Sabha election, when he attacked the voters of Wayanad for belonging to a constituency where “the minority is the majority” and when he ridiculed the notion that Hindus could be terrorists and hand-picked Pragya Thakur as the BJP’s candidate for Bhopal.
Is Varadarajan pleased that Rahul took a safe seat from the Left? Is he very happy to learn that Rahul wears the sacred thread, is a Saivite Brahmin, and likes visiting Temples? Does Varadarajan approve of Priyanka's tweet on the Temple? Look at what she wrote-' “Simplicity, courage, restraint, sacrifice, commitment, are the essence of the name Deenbandhu Lord Rama. Ram is in everyone, Ram is with everyone. With the message and blessings of Lord Ram and Mother Sita, the Bhoomipujan of Ramlalla's temple became an occasion for national unity, fraternity and cultural congregation,” Even the Communists in Kerala aren't making a fuss about this. They accept that Hindus- including Rahul- will go to that Temple if they are able to do so.

With hindsight, it was folly to jail a Hindu nun as a terrorist. The voters don't believe this sort of trumped up charge. That is why the heavyweight, Dinesh Singh, lost to Pragya Thakur on his own home turf.
His first major act in his second term as a prime minister, apart from the ‘triple talaq’ detour, was to take an axe to the constitutional arrangements with Jammu and Kashmir that had actually served the Indian state and its requirements perfectly well.
Nonsense! Kashmir was a shit-show. The police were terrified. That has changed. Imran Khan promised a blood bath. He was disappointed. Now he has formalized the annexation of PoK. 'Azad Kashmir' is off the table.
One year on, it is clear that ‘integration’ for the Kashmiris means being deprived of rights that the constitution of India gives all citizens.
This is certainly an issue which good investigative journalism can contribute to. But such journalism has to be credible. This is where Varadarajan and his ilk have fallen down. If you publish shite by a nutter like Sharjeel Imam, smart people won't want to write for you.
And since there is no one to speak up for the constitution anymore, people in the rest of India will slowly find themselves getting ‘integrated’ with the new reality that the Kashmiris have been dealing with – and they will find their own freedoms and right increasingly trampled underfoot.
If they wage war against the State- yes. But Indians consider that a good thing.
As the experience of Pakistan and Israel demonstrate, cultural-religious states that privilege identitarian values over citizenship are incompatible with democracy.
Yet Israel is a democracy. Pakistan has fallen behind Bangladesh in per capita Income. Yet, at the moment, it too is a Democracy. Imran may yet finish his term.
Given the current wave of right-wing populism, it has become something of a fashion to compare Modi with Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, Jair Bolsonaro and Recip Erdogan. But the strongman in whose disastrous footsteps Modi appears to be dragging India is Slobodan Milosevic. Younger readers will be forgiven for asking ‘Who?’, for his country, the former Yugoslavia, no longer exists.
Very true! Uttar Pradesh is going to go to War with Bihar! Gujarat will declare U.D.I. Tamil Nadu will be broken up into cantons. How stupid is Varadarajan?
The UN’s long-standing ambassador in India in the late 1990s was a diplomat named Feodor Starcevic. He came to India as a citizen of Yugoslavia. But when he was leaving Delhi after retiring sometime around 2003, I remember him saying, ‘I don’t know which country I’m going back to’.
This is bizarre. Starcevic came to India, on a UN passport, though he had Serbian Citizenship, in 1995, three years after the breakup of that country. Starcevic went on to serve as a Serbian diplomat.

Communism had failed to unite Yugoslavia. But India was not united by Communism. It was united by Hinduism. Our regional loyalties have shifted because States have been reorganized. Thus the Nation State of India is the locus of our patriotism.
Beginning in the early 1990s, Yugoslavia’s leaders decided to turn their back on the idea of a state that belonged equally to all its citizens, regardless of religion, ethnicity, language or script. So today, there are seven separate countries or entities, if we include Kosovo, where there was once one.
Why? Because Communism failed. The Soviet Union too broke up. But this is irrelevant to India. Communism never took power at the Center.
India was just emerging from the trauma of the Gujarat violence of 2002 when Starcevic was leaving. At a farewell speech, he urged his host country to look at Yugoslavia in order to learn what not to do.
The man was clearly a cretin. Most people who work for the UN are. I too recall being lectured by a Yugoslav- Dr. Borna Bebek, a friend of Rajiv Gandhi's- about the Yugoslav model of pluralistic democracy back in '82. The thing was all eye-wash. Communism was a sham.
No one could have foreseen at the time that the man whose stewardship had prompted that sage advice would eventually be at the helm of national affairs.
That is true. Modi seemed destined to be a scapegoat. But people like Varadarajan gave him prominence by telling stupid lies about Gujarat. What was the outcome? Gujarat prospered and then gave India a popular two term Prime Minister. Varadarajan, like Ashish Nandy, had met Modi briefly. Both of these patricians sneered at this low-born fellow. They thought they were on a safe wicket denouncing him. But their stupid lies repelled their own class. We started to say to ourselves- 'there must be another side to this story'. Then, people like Madhu Kishwar gave that side of the story to us. But this was not what clinched matters. 'Darbari intellectuals' of the Left, like Varadarjan himself, went too far in denouncing Hinduism. This damaged the Dynasty. Then Rahul failed to step up to the plate. In 2014, it was a case of Modi or Nobody. But Modi improved on his opportunities. I never thought he'd preside over a faction-free Cabinet. Nor did I think he'd do so well in International Diplomacy. But then, I must admit, my thinking is of a very low grade indeed. Modi's isn't. Nor is the thinking of those who vote for him. Varadarajan, on the other hand, is the one person I can still feel superior to. He listens to no one but himself. He keeps repeating the same tired, worn-out, lies. He has learnt nothing and forgotten nothing. Now I rate him lower than even Prem Shankar Jha.
But the RSS listens to no one but itself. On August 5, Modi laid the foundation stone for a structure conceived in the crucible of lies and deceit, violence and bloodshed. He can call it a temple, perhaps he can convince millions of people that it is a temple. But nothing spiritual or holy can ever emerge from a structure built by men who have spent their entire political career demolishing law, morality and the bonds of unity that unite Indians with each other.
It is a sad day when an American Communist with advanced degrees from prestigious Universities feels he has to start blathering about holiness and spirituality. Suddenly, it turns out, the guy is an expert in Temple building. He objects that the thing is not being done properly. He isn't yet saying that he could do a better job himself- perhaps because his ancestors were priests- but that is the road he is headed down. As Trump would say- sad!
