Ghalib (pouring himself a cup of wine):
Hazrat Nāgārjuna, your emptiness is admirable— but I assure you, my heart is full of it.
And Epictetus, your volition is noble— but I choose to choose nothing, quite deliberately.
Epictetus (raising an eyebrow):
So you deny the will, yet exercise it in denial?
Ghalib:
Precisely. My prohairesis is amphibolic. I choose to be chosen by moods I do not understand. That, my friend, is 本性 in its most decadent form.
Nāgārjuna (smiling faintly):
And cetana?
Ghalib:
Ah, cetana is the wine. 本性 is the thirst. The cup is empty, but the longing is real.
Dil-e-naadaan tujhe huaa kya hai— Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai?
(The veena plays a ghazal in reverse. A kanji on the wall morphs into a dancing peacock.)
Epictetus:
You speak in riddles.
Ghalib:
I live in them. Your Stoic citadel is admirable, but I prefer ruins. They echo better.
