The Guardian drunk on Mahua

The Guardian hates India because it is rising economically while becoming more democratic and responsive to the needs and desires of its educationally disadvantaged masses.

It has now chosen to idolize a woman as anti-Indian as itself

Interview
Grit and glamour: how Mahua Moitra shook up the misogyny and hypocrisy of Indian politics

In the Nineties, three strong women- Mayawati, Mamta and Jayalalitha- turned the tables on the patriarchy. Mahua is a nonentity who was picked up by Mamta in the hope that, as an ex-investment banker, she would help attract f.d.i in West Bengal. Sadly, Mahua turned out to be corrupt, sleazy, and shit at politics.

A divorcee who likes a glass of wine and a pair of Ferragamo shoes, the opposition MP has become a target for character assassination for Narendra Modi’s conservatives.

Tarkeshwari Sinha was the first 'Glamour Queen' of the Indian Parliament. After studies at the LSE she was elected to Parliament in 1952. It is rumoured that she, or some other female legislators, brutally raped Feroze Gandhi.

But she hits back twice as hard

By shitting herself publicly. Clearly Modi is forcing Mahua to soil herself. Sadly, it is the Court she needs to fear. She may be sent to jail for taking cash to table parliamentary questions.

Mahua Moitra is a misfit in Indian politics.

She is a failed Investment Banker who entered Indian politics after the market crash. But she is in a hurry to make a lot of money. The same may be true of other TMC politicians but they keep quiet about it.

She rejects the notion that a woman must ideally be married,

Mamta, Mayawati, Jayalalitha etc did not get married.

and if she happens to be divorced, single or widowed, should not openly date or be seen to be in a relationship.

Nobody cares. They just don't want you to enrich yourself unconscionably.

Nor should she drink or smoke in public or be seen arm in arm with a man.

Also you should not fist yourself in public

Moitra, 49, is a divorcee. She drinks wine occasionally, has her nails done once in a while, likes Ferragamo shoes and carries a Louis Vuitton handbag.

Much like the Pope.

It gets worse. She went to college in the US and was a banker with JP Morgan Chase in New York and London, so is, ipso facto, westernised.

Sonia Gandhi is actually Western. That is why she can't get elected in India.

As an opposition MP from West Bengal, she denounces the ruling party and has accused the prime minister, Narendra Modi, of cronyism in allegedly favouring the controversial tycoon Gautam Adani.

But her own CM, Mamta Bannerjee, wants Adani to build the Tajpur port. No doubt, Mahua & Co made some money by attacking Adani so as to help short-sellers like Hindenburg but Adani stock has bounced back. Every Opposition State has Adani projects. It is foolish to think Modi needs Adani. All Corporates need Adani to keep the Indian economy from going off a fiscal cliff.

When attacked, she hits back twice as hard,

No. She shits herself.  There is no point playing the 'poor me, I'm being targeted because I have a vagina' when the toughest politician in India is your boss- Mamta Bannerjee.

usually topped with a dollop of withering sarcasm.

She shits herself and then pretends she sat down in some chocolate cake.

Is it any wonder that she feels she is a target for character assassination, particularly from members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata party (BJP), with its conservative notions about society and women?

BJP has allied with Mamta and Jayalalitha in the past. They had tall female leaders like Uma Bharti and Sushma Swaraj.  They promote on the basis of talent and track record. Look at Smriti or Nirmala.

Moitra accuses the BJP of portraying her in an unflattering light by circulating photos, taken at a private birthday party in 2020, that show her leaning into a fellow MP with a glass of wine in her hand. She says a jilted ex cropped the photos and gave them to the BJP to circulate on social media.

How is it unflattering to be seen elegantly dressed in the company of the elderly, but still quite dashing, Shashi Tharoor? Why bring up her 'jilted ex' who is younger than her and says she used her political position to snoop on him and his alleged relationship with some German lady?

“I’m not going to make excuses for who I am. I am not going to change who I am to fit the paradigm. Let the paradigm shift with me. When I returned to India to enter politics, I was clear that I wanted to be in public life but by being myself,” she says.

She likes money. She entered Indian politics after global markets crashed because Indian politicians can become very very rich- if they belong to Congress or the TMC. It would have been fine if she had been a 'fixer' like Amar Singh who donated 5 million to the Clinton Foundation. Everyone knew he was corrupt but he was useful and his appearances on TV were always worth watching. Mahua lacks Amar's polish and gift of the gab.

It’s a grey, smog-filled morning in New Delhi and Moitra is sitting on a leather armchair in her elegantly furnished official bungalow.

Which she will lose. Tihar Jail will provide her free accommodation.

Her hair is damp from a shower and she’s wearing a casual skirt and white top. Her rottweiler, Henry (“he thinks he’s King Henry”), alternates between slobbering by her side or sprawling on the leather coffee table.

He was named Henry Kissinger- not a popular name in Bengal because Kissinger backed the Pakistani genocide there.

Moitra shows no sign of fatigue

because she just had a shower. Oh. I forgot how women sometimes use shower-heads. That can be very fatiguing.

after a bruising few weeks of news coverage. First it was the ex and the photos. “I have terrible taste in men,” she says.

Hopefully, her showerhead is up to scratch.

Then a BJP MP accused her of accepting bribes to ask questions in parliament at the behest of a businessman – charges she has dismissed as absurd,

though the businessman has confirmed it.

telling one interviewer that she has no need of bribes to buy upmarket shoes because she can buy them herself.

She could also have got a proper job and become rich rather than become a corrupt 'neta'.

As to the “expensive gifts” she is accused of accepting, she says one – a Hermès scarf – was a birthday gift and the other was some Bobbi Brown makeup brought in duty free by a friend.

But the businessman tells a different story.

The accusations, she says, are all part of the usual misogyny in Indian politics

it was misogyny which prevented Indira Gandhi become Prime Minister before this lady was born.

– she is often referred to as “ambitious” and “domineering” –

No. The businessman calls her 'dominating' and 'assertive'. She would keep asking him to do things urgently for her. He is pretending he was sucked into this by her. She calls his affidavit an 'approver affidavit'- i.e. he will give incriminating evidence once he gets immunity in return for his testimony.

which she says has been made worse by the BJP’s 10-year rule. The media ordeal she has been subjected to is, she says, an attempt by the BJP to stop her relentless attacks on the government over Adani.

If they haven't harmed Adani, how can they harm Modi? Recall Kejriwal made the mistake of training his guns on Ambani so as to target the ruling party. It didn't work and he dropped the matter. As a matter of fact, Anil Ambani- once the sixth richest man on the planet- did go bankrupt. But there was no political fallout.

If Moitra does not conform to the stereotype of a female politician, it’s because

female politicians in India tend to be serious people of high character. They want power, not money or handbags.

no one told her what it was. She grew up in a family in Kolkata where gender equality was a given. “My family is progressive and non-traditional. I didn’t grow up with Indian roles of how a woman should be.”

Plenty of successful Indian women politicians grew up in very conservative households. This didn't stop them from rising to the top.

When Moitra came back to India in 2008

because the bottom had fallen out of the Investment Banking business

to enter politics, the party she ultimately joined, the Trinamool Congress, was (and still is) led by a woman, Mamata Banerjee,

Congress was led by a woman at that time.

who encourages women to be themselves.

Mamta told Mahua to take a much younger boyfriend but then alienate him by using her political clout to harass him in various ways.

Almost half the party’s MPs in the national parliament are women, far more than for other parties.

Mamta sent a pair of very beautiful film actresses to the Lok Sabha. They haven't achieved much. Still, it should be mentioned that the Muslim one had a baby without getting married- or rather, she had an invalid wedding ceremony. Everybody sympathized. Why buy the bull when you get its jizz for free?

Moitra’s party rules in the state of West Bengal. The state, like others, has its own pantheon of Hindu gods and goddesses, which include two who embody feminine power. “In Bengal, we see the feminine form and women not as submissive but as shakti [strength]. Our goddesses are Kali or Durga, strong conquerers,” Moitra says.

All Hindu states have the same female Goddesses. Jayalalitha was CM for fourteen years. She'd still be in power if she hadn't developed obesity related illnesses.

These factors encouraged her to believe that she could engage in grassroots political activity without getting caught up in the hypocrisies of Indian politics.

Trinamool means 'grassroots'. The problem is that those guys are either thugs or are corrupt unless, of course, they are both.

These hypocrisies include having clandestine sexual relationships and dressing down to signal a pro-poor image

neither of which her fellow TMC MPs who are beautiful, young, film actresses bother to do.

– while the drawers at home are maybe full of Rolex watches and Gucci sandals, accessories reserved for private functions when no photographers are around.

Then the ED conducts a raid and it all comes out into the open.

Moitra refuses to go along with this pretence. “I like to be fit, I like to look a certain way,”

Sadly, because of her age, she can't compete with  Nusrat Jahan and Mimi Chakraborty

she says. “My constituents don’t want me to look unwashed and unkempt. If I’m in boring clothes, they tell me to wear bright colours.”

They don't say that to Mamta. They know she cares only about raising up all the people of her state. She has no personal vanity.

A friend, supreme court lawyer Rebecca John, explains why Moitra is one of a kind in politics.

She has no ideology or platform of her own. Mamta thought she would be useful. It appears she is sticking with Mahua because CPM appealed to her personally. If Mamta gets 'two horse races 'against BJP with Congress and Left Front remaining content with one or two seats, then backing Mahua pays off. Otherwise, Mamta should cut her loose because attacking Adani means Tajpur project ceases to be credible.

“The Indian man, more so the politician, cannot handle a woman who has a brain, is well educated, understands finance, is confident, and exercises sexual agency.

Indira Gandhi did fine even though everybody thought Dhirendra Brahmacharee was teaching her Yoga with his dick.

That’s why the right goes after her,” she says.

Why don't they go after Nusrat Jahan? Her ex was involved in a gang rape case. She has a baby out of wedlock. It appears that the father is Hindu. Still, people feel she earns her own money and should not have to provide for some useless hubby.

In early November, when Moitra appeared before the parliamentary ethics committee to answer questions on the corruption allegations, she stormed out, along with half the panel,

They belonged to the opposition. However a Sikh lady who is an Independent member, remained.

after being asked insulting and salacious questions by the chair.

There was no such question. Mahua is pretending that a Sikh lady- Maharani of Patiala, no less!- will sit idly by while the modesty of a woman is outraged.

Questions included: Who do you talk to late at night and how many times?

If she had consulted a good lawyer she should have given the following answer 'I receive many calls related to my Parliamentary work. I am always careful to put in 'ear buds' so as not to disturb my partner who would also have work of his own.' The Panel then says 'have you ever broken the ear buds and thus had to use the speaker of the phone?' She should reply 'not to my recollection. I always keep spare ear buds in my purse and there is one in my bedside cabinet.' This throws doubt on the affidavit by her ex.

You call so and so a dear friend … does his wife know?

'I call Hiranandani my dear friend because we share a passion for lifting up West Bengal so that it once again becomes the most industrialized and highest per-capita income State in India. This is the vision of Mamta Bannerjee. You ask about his wife- maybe she suspects something just as maybe my ex became jealous. But I have to work with might and main for upliftment of people of West Bengal even if this causes jealousy to some other person'.

Give us a log of your late-night calls.

Yes Sir. I have instructed my PA to gather that information. It is important that people of West Bengal know that its TMC representatives in Parliament work tirelessly to fulfil the vision of Mamta Bannerjee.  '

Which hotels do you stay in and who with?

She can start naming hotels and explaining how during each such visit- even if was purely a family occasion- she sought to attract f.d.i to West Bengal or to help it in some other way. If she stayed with Hiranandani or some other businessman she can mention the projects in West Bengal in which they are investing. Obviously, if you stay with a person, you can converse more easily. You can reassure the investor that Mamta's administration will make things smooth for them.

“You can say no if you don’t want to answer,” said the chair.

She could say 'as far as my public life is concerned I am eager to cooperate. As MPs we should be like an open book to dispel any suspicion of our integrity. However, I would not like to answer questions of a purely personal nature as it would set a bad precedent and may lower the dignity of the House.

“Do you mean to tell me you can ask me if I am a prostitute and I should say no?” a furious Moitra asked the chair, a BJP MP.

Mahua has a right not to incriminate herself. She has no right to put words into the mouth of the Chair of a Parliamentary Committee. How would she have liked it if the Chair had replied 'Are you saying you shit into your hands and then eat that shit after uttering the prayer 'Please God, strike Mamta blind''?

Today she says: “I mean if someone like Dominic Cummings uses the C-word for a woman, it’s bad, but at least it was in private. This was the chair of an official committee talking to me like this in public.”

But he didn't call her a prostitute. She put those words into his mouth. Now she is using the C-word. Is this because she frequently shits into her cupped hands and then eats that shit after praying to God that He strike Mamta blind? Why are TMC politicians promoting coprophagy in this shameless manner? Don't they know that it is bad for your health if you eat your own shit?

At this point Henry starts whimpering, thinking her raised voice means she is upset.

Or that she is going to shit into her hands. Henry feels such behaviour is infra dig.

She gets up to cuddle him before conceding that perhaps there is one thing she needs to change about herself: her choice of men.

Choosing to eat your own shit is a more serious problem.

“Let’s face it, this has distracted to an extent from the focus I want to give my constituents. In public life, you have to be extra selective about who you let into your life,” she says.

Nusrat Jahan hasn't been 'extra selective' and no harm has befallen her. The mistake is to take cash for questions and then harass an ex-boyfriend who knows your dirty secrets. What made things worse was that the ex was a Supreme Court lawyer whose affidavit was highly detailed. After Hiranandani's lawyers read it, they advised him to submit what Mahua called an 'approver affidavit'. By doing so she was admitting she had committed a criminal offense.

Moitra is not so conceited to think she can be a role model for anyone, but she is certain that new role models are badly needed for women in public life.

Nusrat started off as an actual fashion model. She went on to success in the film industry before, like many actresses before her- e.g. Jayalalitha- entering politics.

“If I can be the first politician who is comfortable in her own skin, I’m good with that.”

Tarkeshwari Sinha was comfortable in her own skin. She became an MP at the age of 26. She appeared on an American TV show 'To tell the Truth' in 1957. She was close to Morarji and would have become the first female Finance Minister if Desai had got the top job. When Mahua entered Parliament, many of us believed that she could act as a sort of shadow Finance Minister grilling Nirmala Sitharaman on fiscal policy. We now understand that she is a greedy little hustler with a foul mouth. She brings disgrace to Mamta and the great state of West Bengal.

The Guardian, however, finds Mamta so intoxicating and addictive that a month after the piece quoted above came out it had another article on her, this time by a woman named Hannah Ellis-Petersen

It’s a saga that has had the hallways of India’s parliament abuzz for months: one that began with a bitter custody battle over a rottweiler dog named Henry, and culminated with the expulsion of one of the fiercest critics of the prime minister.

Sadly, Modi has no effective, as opposed to rabid, critics. I'd have thought that at least one MP, fluent in Hindi, could have taken him on. Mahua, according to Hiranandani, attacks Modi so as to get media attention. She doesn't care that she is unable to harm him in any way. The better strategy would be to pick on Nirmala Sitharaman, Modi's Finance Minister, and try to rattle her cage. But Nirmala is a fluent debater.

Mahua Moitra, the MP who was expelled from parliament earlier this month after a vote, described the situation as “so ridiculous I feel like pinching myself”.

She never dreamt that she might end up in an Indian jail. Had she taken proper legal advise, she would have placated the Ethics Committee instead of antagonising them.

“Make no mistake, this is a misogynistic witch-hunt intended to shame me into silence,” she added. “But they have miscalculated badly – I’m not going anywhere.”

She is out of parliament and may soon be in jail. It is she who miscalculated.

From the moment she was elected, Moitra, an investment banker turned first-time MP from the opposition party Trinamool Congress, made herself a thorn in the side of Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) government.

She spoke well and quoted Hindi poets. Had she done her homework, she might have been a good sparring partner for Nirmala. But she was in a hurry to get noticed. Maybe this pleased Mamta. But it was a mistake to go after Adani while taking money from a business rival of his.

She quickly rose to prominence after she stood up in parliament and listed the “seven signs of fascism” evident under Modi’s government.

This was hilarious. Mamta's goons had beaten the shit out of the Commies. It was she who was the Fascist- not to mention Sonia, the daughter of an actual Italian Fascist.

In successive speeches, many of which went viral, she directly accused the prime minister of crushing the media, manipulating the judiciary, “spreading falsehoods” and persecuting Muslims through discriminatory laws.

In other words, she endeared Modi to the anglophone elite.

Her refusal to be apologetic for her forthright personality, love of expensive things and life as a single, divorced woman also stood her apart.

She was a brazen hussy. Nothing wrong in that. The mistake was to get caught taking money from a rival billionaire.

“Mahua breaks the mould of an Indian parliamentarian,” said Mukulika Banerjee,

who is gaga for RaGa

a professor of social anthropology

i.e. as stupid as shit

at LSE. “She is glamorous, she’s smart, she’s relentless and she’s unafraid to ask difficult questions of the government, even when they try to humiliate her.

She humiliated herself.  The government didn't have to life a finger.

This misogynistic government doesn’t know how to handle that,

Expulsion and a criminal investigation can't be termed 'handling'- right?

and that’s why we’ve seen this systematic effort to silence her.”

Actually, the more she talks and tweets the more we realize she is stupid and ignorant. In her most recent tweet she confused Raghuram Iyer- who has had a successful career with various sports teams in the IPL- with Abhijit Iyer-Mitra a prominent homosexual journalist.

Her profile was raised even further this year when she began raising questions about Modi’s relationship with the powerful billionaire industrialist Gautam Adani, after the Adani conglomerate was accused of the “biggest con in corporate history” including fraud and stock price manipulation.

Adani's stock recovered. It appears they will get a clean chit. The question is whether they will go to the courts to collect damages.

Behind the scenes, Moitra alleges she was approached by a close emissary to the prime minister, who sits in the parliamentary upper house, telling her explicitly to stay away from discussions of Modi’s relationship to Adani.

I was approached by Bill Gates who offered to give me a blow-job in return for a loan of a tenner. Why won't people believe Mahua or me when we tell you such things?

Rahul Gandhi, the senior leader of the opposition National Congress party, had also raised similar allegations about Modi and Adani.

But Congress Chief Ministers- like Revanth Reddy in Telengana just a few days ago- welcome the Adanis with open arms. Rahul is retarded.

Not long after, he found himself convicted in a “politically motivated” defamation case

which was initiated before he started denouncing the Adanis

and was expelled from parliament, though this was overturned by the courts in August.

because the silly man wouldn't apologize for saying 'all crooks are Modis'. Still, that case, and others like it haven't gone away. But, if he loses his seat in Kerala that won't matter.

“They were just waiting for their moment to shut me up,” said Moitra.

The BJP has a big majority. They could have expelled her on some other excuse. Mahua's undoing was solely her own handiwork.

“And I guess Henry was the genesis of all of this.”

Henry is not a politician but a rottweiler, owned by Moitra and her ex-partner, Jai Anant Dehadrai.

She says it was her dog. Her boyfriend looked after it when she was out of town. He has his own story to tell. It isn't pretty.

They both acknowledge that a custody battle over Henry, whom they refer to as “like their child”, turned ugly earlier this year. By September, Moitra had filed a police case against Dehadrai and sent senior officers to his door to get him to sign a custody agreement for Henry, which he refused.

The Guardian thinks this is routine behaviour rather an abuse of political power. Her ex says she also used her political connections to snoop on him and a German lady.

In the weeks that followed, Dehadrai took action of his own. In a complaint filed to India’s Central Bureau of Investigation, he alleged that he had “irrefutable evidence” that Moitra was accepting large cash bribes and gifts from a Dubai-based businessman, Darshan Hiranandani, to ask questions in parliament that suited his business interests, in particular to target rival Adani. Dehadrai later alleged that Moitra’s lawyer had tried to “coerce” him into withdrawing the complaint by offering him custody of Henry.

More damagingly, he says Mahua turned up uninvited at his residence on two successive days so as to threaten and intimidate him.

Dehadrai also forwarded the complaint to a BJP MP – who also happened to be in a feud with Moitra after she had publicly accused him of forging his masters degree certificate and humiliated him in parliament. He took the allegations straight to the parliamentary speaker, calling it a “cash for questions scandal”.

He had the last laugh. In India, people sympathize with you if you claim to have a degree when you are in fact illiterate. Mamta claimed to have a Doctorate from 'East Georgia University'.

In early November, Moitra was hauled in front of the parliamentary ethics committee, even as several opposition politicians on the panel raised concerns that the hearing was a farce.

It is ridiculous to suggest that legislators have any fucking ethics. Nobody enters politics save to get rich.

“The dispute over a dog has come to the ethics committee. We are ashamed to discuss this,” said one MP, while another described the hearing as “dealing with a dog matter”.

They were dealing with a rabid bitch.

But they were silenced by the BJP committee chairman, who proceeded to interrogate Moitra with a series of questions about her relationship with Hiranandani that she described as “disgusting, sexist and completely unethical”.

She didn't want to admit that she had failed to sit on the fellow's face. It is utterly disgusting to suggest that Mahua's strap-on hasn't penetrated crores of Indian crorepatis.

“He asked me how often did I speak to Darshan [Hiranandani] and on what apps, how often do I go see him in Dubai, do we meet in a hotel, does his wife know that you call him a dear friend?” said Moitra. “I was so furious that in the end I just walked out.”

Had she consulted a lawyer she would have seen that she was being offered a way out. There is no law against fucking a billionaire and taking gifts from him. If he is married, he may deny that he gave gifts in return for sex, as opposed to asking questions in Parliament. It would also explain the ex-boyfriend's motive in dishing the dirt on her. He was jelly that his elderly g.f was getting pounded by a rich dude.

Despite objections by some non-BJP committee members at the “prejudicial” questioning,

Some of them were probably smart enough to see the questioning was offering her a way out of her predicament. She could say 'well, I can't answer any personal question, but, yes, there were gifts and, I suppose, a wife might object to that but I can assure you nothing improper from the political point of view occurred.'

the chairman put it on the record that Moitra had refused to cooperate.

because she had refused to cooperate.

In an affidavit signed by Hiranandani, the businessman admitted Moitra had shared her parliamentary login with him and had asked him, as an old and trusted friend, to post questions “directly on her behalf” from his Dubai office. He also said he had agreed to “favours” she had asked of him, including “expensive luxury items” and “travel expenses”. But both Moitra and Hiranandani stood firm that no bribes had been given.

No. Hiranandani has not said anything that would incriminate him- so far. But he is clearly angling for an immunity deal. That's why Mahua says he gave an 'approver affidavit'. You can't turn approver till criminal charges are filed. I suppose this will happen soon enough.

Moitra insists that all the questions submitted were her own and that no rules were broken. Hiranandani declined to comment for this article.

Because he consulted good lawyers. He just says again and again 'I committed an error of judgment'. Once he gets a plea deal, he will reveal incriminating evidence.

Though the committee admitted it had no proof yet of cash exchanges for questions, it ultimately recommended Moitra’s expulsion for sharing the login, calling her conduct “highly objectionable, unethical, heinous and criminal”.

All she had to do was display contrition and sow a seed of doubt that any money she received was for sexual, not political, favours.

According to one member, the committee’s decision to find her guilty by majority vote was made in less than three minutes with no discussion.

None was needed. The one Independent MP- a Sikh woman- voted against Mahua.

Moitra declared the committee to be a “kangaroo court” and said that their decision had been based on “no evidence at all”.

She also declared she was innocent. But she was lying. On the other hand, it really is true that Bill Gates wants to give me a b.j in return for the loan of a tenner.

On 8 December, Moitra’s expulsion was put to a vote in parliament, where the BJP commands a huge majority. Even before the ethics committee report had been uploaded on the parliament portal, and without giving her a chance to address the chamber, they voted to expel her from parliament.

Because the case had got a lot of coverage. Mahua had pretended that her billionaire chum had been threatened and coerced into giving the adverse affidavit. He denied this strenuously. Then people started looking at her tweets and realized she was stupid, ignorant, and had a filthy mouth.

Mamata Banerjee, the leader of Moitra’s party, called the expulsion “unacceptable” and a betrayal of democratic values.

Democratic values involve sending your thugs to crack the skulls of your opponents. Why Modi not bashing and beating Mahua? Is it because he is misogynist? This is totally unacceptable.

Several other opposition leaders also rallied around Moitra, alleging she had been targeted for speaking out against Adani, and stood beside her on the steps of parliament as she addressed the Modi government and vowed to fight it “for the next 30 years inside parliament, outside parliament, in the gutter, on the streets”.

on the streets is fine. Why mention the gutter? Anyway, like other great freedom fighters, Mahua will soon be in jail. She is like Nelson Mandela- innit?

Moitra is now challenging her expulsion in the supreme court, even though it only lasts for the next few months until India holds its general election, likely to be in May.

She may be prosecuted before that. If she is sentenced to more than two years she is automatically disqualified for the next two general elections.

Moitra said she was confident of her re-election and return to parliament once again. “These are just small men with small minds and unluckily for them, I’m tough as nails,” she said.

Unluckily for her, her nails have scratched only her own eyes out. Still, there is a feminist message here which astute Guardian readers will read between the lines. Mahua's life has been blighted by men with small dicks. If only Henry the rottweiler could learn cunnilingus, she could be a very satisfied woman.
